Little Nightmares is one of the most exciting new horror game IPs of recent memory, with the first game launching back in 2017 followed by a sequel in 2021. Announced during Gamescom, Little Nightmares 3 will be the first game in the series to include multiplayer co-op – but only online. Now, the team behind the upcoming title has explained exactly why.
In an interview conducted by Gamesradar+, the developers of Little Nightmares 3 – Supermassive Games – spoke on the upcoming 2024 title, its tone, the implicit horror of the series and more.
For the first time, Little Nightmares 3 will let you take on the horrors with a friend, though only via online co-op. Explaining the reasons behind this decision, Supermassive's game director Wayne Garland said:
“Co-op was the most requested feature from our fans, so it was really important for us to give them that. I do think that it will add a layer to the game as well, by letting you experience it with a friend.”
They continued, “We've been asked questions about online versus couch co-op. Couch is something that we considered, but again, when you come back to the atmosphere and the immersion that we're trying to elicit through Little Nightmares, I think it was important for us that we stuck to our online co-op only rather than traditional more party aspects.”
Little Nightmares is a rather sombre game, and so it makes sense as to why the team opted not to include local co-op in order to ensure that the title’s tone is maintained. Hopefully this decision pans out when Little Nightmares 3 releases some time in 2024.
