SanDisk’s ‘world’s fastest’ SD cards boast SSD-like speeds

SanDisk this week introduced its new SecureDigital memory cards compliant with the latest UHS-II standard that can offer performance of low-cost solid-state drives, which is needed to shoot videos in ultra-high-definition resolutions. The new SanDisk Extreme PRO SDHC/SDXC UHS-II memory cards are designed for experienced users and require cameras and card-readers that also comply with the UHS-II spec.

Professional cameras used for 4K video recording use proprietary solid-state drives to enable maximum performance and reliability. Such drives are very expensive for consumers, whereas high-speed writes and reads are crucial for ultra-high-definition video recording and subsequent processing. The SSD-class performance of SanDisk Extreme PRO SD UHS-II cards allows owners of new advanced cameras to enter the world of 4K content creation with all the possible comfort.

The new SanDisk Extreme PRO SD UHS-II cards offer up to 250MB/s write speeds for continuous burst mode shooting and transfer speeds of up to 280MB/s for maximum workflow efficiency. The SanDisk Extreme PRO SD UHS-II cards are UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) enabled. The UHS E3 is a new specification developed specifically to allow high-quality 4K video recording using consumer and prosumer cameras. Professional photographers will also take advantage of the new memory cards' performance.

SanDisk has also announced the external SanDisk Extreme PRO SD UHS-II card reader/writer, the world’s first SDHC/SDXC UHS-II memory card reader/writer that is compatible with the latest SecureDigital specifications and which utilizes USB 3.0 interface with up to 500MB/s transfer speed.

SanDisk Extreme PRO SDHC/SDXC UHS-II cards are available for preorder on www.sandisk.com now, with worldwide availability in April in 16GB to 64GB capacities carrying MSRPs of $119.99 to $299.99 (£71.6 – £179.1). The SanDisk Extreme PRO SDHC/SDXC UHS-II card reader/writer is also available for preorder online now, with worldwide availability in April at an MSRP of $49.99 (£30).

KitGuru Says: While the SanDisk Extreme PRO SDHC/SDXC UHS-II cards do offer performance levels in line with that of inexpensive solid-state drives, they ironically cost more than high-performance SSDs for desktops and laptops.
