ChatOn, the IM service provided on Samsung phones, has managed to double its user base in the last four months, hitting the 100 million user milestone. The cross platform messaging service is available on: IOS, Android, Blackberry and Samsung's own mobile OS ‘Bada'.
Samsung pre-installs this app on its android phones and many would just ignore it, but the app has seen popularity in India and China. Launching in 2011, Samsung was trying to break in to the IM and social networking market, facing competition from rivals like ‘Whatsapp'. Whatsapp is available in fewer territories but has a user base three times the size.
ChatOn is doing well for now, but it may receive increased competition now that BBM is coming to Android and IOS. Initially exclusive to Blackberry devices, BBM became really popular, driving phone sales for the company.
KitGuru Says: I'm actually quite surprised at the amount of users on ChatOn, I ignored it when I got my Galaxy S3 and I don't really know anybody else who does make use of the service. However, as it turns out people do, lets see if it continues to be popular in the face of competition. Which app do you use as an alternative to texting?
