Mortal Shell is one of the better known Souls-like titles. The action-RPG which “tests your sanity and resilience in a shattered world” released back in August 2020 to a warm reception from fans of the genre. Since then, the game has been improved with current-gen support and an expansion. All this has made for a highly successful title which has now officially sold over 1 million copies.
In an interview conducted by Gamesindustry.biz, Mortal Shell’s publisher Playstack revealed that the souls-like has sold over 1 million copies since its launch back in 2020. Even more impressive is the fact that this does not account for the game’s total player base, as Mortal Shell has been on both PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass in the past.
Speaking on how they managed to achieve such strong numbers for a brand new IP, Playstack’s VP of Publishing Rob Crossley said “Like with most AAA and premium indie games, the Mortal Shell audience is exceptionally marketing-literate, They know the event calendar; they know what channels and platforms to find games through. And they are simply incredible at sharing.”
He continued, “I remember, back in 2020, someone in the chat on Asmongold's Twitch stream asked him to watch the Mortal Shell reveal trailer, which he did live to tens of thousands of viewers. It's hard to put a cost on the value of that kind of organic marketing, it's just so fantastic. Games customers are highly savvy, they know precisely what they want and can be outstanding advocates. That's a huge advantage for a game such as Mortal Shell, which inspires passion.”
Selling 1 million copies is no small feat, especially for a brand new IP such as Mortal Shell. It will be interesting to see what plans the teams at Cold Symmetry and Playstack have for the future of this burgeoning franchise. The full interview can be found HERE.
