Motorola’s Project Ara is one step closer to reality

A few weeks back we reported on Motorola's ‘Project Ara', for those who didn't see, Motorola has teamed up with the man behind the Phonebloks campaign and is aiming to make a modular and customisable smartphone. Motorola is now one step closer to making this happen as it has penned a deal with 3D systems.

ARA

3D systems is going to “create a continuous high-speed 3D printing production platform and fulfillment system” , which will help Motorola jump the project's biggest hurdle: manufacturing. If 3D systems is successful in figuring out the manufacturing process it will become Motorola’s exclusive fulfilment partner and create its own enclosures and modules.

Avi Reichental, President and CEO of 3D Systems, said in a statement:

“Project Ara was conceived to build a platform that empowers consumers all over the world with customisation for a product made by and for the individual,” he said. “3D printing promotes a level of sustainability, functionality, and mass personalisation that turns these kinds of global ambitions into attainable local realities. Project Ara combines two exponential technologies, and we expect that the resulting high-throughput advanced manufacturing platform will have far reaching implications on the entire digital thread that stitches together the factory of the future.”

Kitguru Says: This could take a couple of years but at least there are company's out there is willing to take the chance. Building and customising your own phone, much like building a PC, is proving to be a very popular concept. Are you guys excited to see how this plays out?
