Next iPhone could have 3D technology

Apple users are known for getting rather excited about incremental updates to their latest handheld device, but the next-generation of iPhones and iPad's could have a lot more – a whole extra dimension – if Apple decides to leverage the Israeli firm it purportedly just bought for a whopping $345 (£215) million.

This report comes from Calcalist (via Reuters), with no sources cited for the purchase – so take this news with a pinch of salt – but with the Israeli firm's – known as PrimeSense – history in 3D sensing and interaction, it could make for some interesting developments. It could well mean that Apple's next-generation of gadgets may take advantage of some of the features that we've so far seen exclusively on hardware like the Kinect.

PrimeSense tech was used in the development of the Kinect. I wonder how this will affect future Microsoft developments.

When asked to comment, one Primesense spokersperson said: “We are focused on building a prosperous company while bringing 3D sensing and natural interaction to the mass market in a variety of markets such as interactive living room and mobile devices. We do not comment on what any of our partners, customers or potential customers are doing and we do not relate to rumours or recycled rumours.”

KitGuru Says: If Apple is looking to get into the 3D sensing game, perhaps it will use this technology for facial recognition on its handsets? Similarly, it could add features like that to its AppleTV set-top box. What are some users you guys could think up?
