The Wii U has struggled since its release last year, its had a decent sales peak in October thanks to the release of Zelda Wind Waker HD but for the most part its not done well at all. The lack of sales has caused many to give up on the Wii U and it seems that former THQ president and Naughty Dog co founder, Jason Rubin thinks that Nintendo should give up on consoles completely.
In an episode of Bonus Round on Game Trailers, Rubin said: “Nintendo's irrelevant as a hardware manufacturer in the console business.” He also said that Nintendo's own financial data offers proof as it has only managed to shift 3.61 million consoles to date but Nintendo had previously hoped to sell 9 million by the end of March 2014.
While Rubin might think that Nintendo doesn't have a place in the hardware business, he does think that the iconic franchises should carry over to the systems people are actually buying: “It is a crime that we do not play those games on the systems that we have.”
KitGuru Says: While its true that the Wii U is struggling, the 3DS has been doing very well and the original Wii outsold the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Hopefully the next time Nintendo takes a crack at releasing a console, it learns from the mistakes of the Wii U. It's a shame because I actually think the Wii U is a really cool console, it just needs some more games and features.
They won’t learn from the mistakes of the Wii U as the never learnt from the mistakes of the n64 or gamecube. Nintendo are old men out of touch with modern gaming and released and abysmally inferior system that’ll earn the title of the worst selling console of the past decade. Nintendo have had their time and like the samurai are now antiquated.
It’s a little retarded to say Nintendo don’t belong in the hardware business, they have amazing hand held consoles, who doesn’t have a DS? I’ve been talking with the guys in the office here and we are all going to buy a Wii U after Christmas when they hopefully drop in price, they look great for having just normal gaming fun and non of this ooooh look at the grphx crap that people care about with the Xbone and PS4.
Gaming PC + Nintendo is all you need.
I don’t know if my views on nintendo are purely because of the significance of Nintendo and it’s GameBoy on my generation.
But there will always be a place for a small, well done handheld console.
The issue is that smartphones are digging into there appeal.
I personally haven’t owned one of their consoles since the GB colour due to not being able to afford them and now i’m older, PC is my main concentration.
there living room offers have lacked a little for years.
the Wii was a gimmick that never really lived upto the hype.
If they made something powerful and a bit more conventional with regards to controlling it, they could have some real impact.
I remember playing Super Smash Bro’s for the first time at my friends house on their Game Cube. I’d still happily sit and play that game.
