Hackers take down game services to spite streamer

With Lulzsec betrayed and downed and Anonymous set to cruise speed at the moment, it's been a while since a hacking group has made headlines, but today that changes with DERPTrolling, a group that has systematically downed several gaming services with DDOS attacks, seemingly to spite – or troll at least – one streamer.

The man they targeted was PhantomL0rd, one of the biggest gaming streamers in the world and a high level League of Legends player. It's not clear if he did something to annoy DERPTrolling, or if just being a big name made him a big target as well. Either way though, the hackers began messing with him late last night, asking him “how is your DOTA game going?” before shortly after informing him “no dota for you #offline.”

Over the next few hours, the DERPTrolling took down League of Legends' login servers, Battle.net services like World of Warcraft and some of EA's websites too.

Those god damn Derp brothers…

It all got a bit more serious though when the cops showed up at PhantomLord's house, on a phony terrorist call. “Just had an automatic pointed at me, put in hand cuffs and sat in the back of a cop car as I watched as 6…” read his tweet shortly after. Ultimately he was ok, but it took a few hours.

In the mean time, DERPTrolling has been hitting other targets, like North Korean websites, World of Tanks servers and more. It/They have also been dodging the police according to its official Twitter.

KitGuru Says: Remind me not to be a Twitch streamer. It seems it's far too easy to have people screw with you. Or forget to turn the camera off and screw yourself and your girl at the same time. [Cheers Kotaku]

Someone should really do something about this, we (me and two of my friends) were trying to log into league for like two hours last night. Then when we finally got in nothing was working. Then the “match found” message would not show up for everyone so one of us would get banned for declining a match. It was a disaster, and it wasn’t just for us, over 20,000 people were trying to log on all at the same time!
