Obvious Nintendo Wii U advert is obvious

One of the biggest complaints any Nintendo fan will have of the Wii U marketing strategy, is that most of it's target audience (Wii owners) don't realise it's a new console. This isn't too surprising considering what the Wii U is called and what it looks like, but most importantly, how it's been promoted. Well now that's all about to change, as Nintendo's latest web advert couldn't make it more obvious: the Wii U is a “NEW” console.

It's an interesting strategy and it will be interesting to see if it pays off for Nintendo. The game library on the machine is starting to become a lot more enticing for casual and more hardcore gamers, with games like the HD Zelda Wind Waker, upcoming Hyrule Warriors, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Smash Bros Wii U and a new Mario Kart (and don't forget Monster Hunter Ultimate, which I still want to play pretty badly).

The question though is whether Nintendo can sell enough systems to sell those games too?

While a lot of people have claimed the Wii U will kill Nintendo's hardware business, it's worth remembering that it took the world a year to figure out it wanted a 3Ds and now that's a massively selling handheld. Perhaps the Wii U just took a while to get going too.

KitGuru Says: If I hadn't bought an Oculus Rift recently, I'd have gotten myself a Wii U for Christmas. It still looks more exciting than both machines from Microsoft or Sony. [Cheers Kotaku]
