Netflix will start streaming 4K in February

Yesterday we reported that Amazon was going to begin filming all future projects in 4K, in that same article we talked a bit about Netflix filming season one of its original series ‘House of Cards' in ultra high definition as well as testing 4K streams. Netflix has now confirmed that Season two of House of Cards will be delivered to viewers in 4K making it one of the first major streams to tackle the resolution.

Netflix chief product officer, Neil Hunt, gave a statement to the website ‘Stuff‘ saying': “We're working specifically with David Fincher on House of Cards season 2, and that's all being shot and edited for 4K delivery.”

The company's current plan includes using House of Cards and various other shows as a set of sample offerings rather than a big catalogue. Considering Netflix is ready with its 4K content, TV manufacturers need to keep up their end by delivering 4K ready Netflix apps on upcoming smart TV's: “We’re not naming specific manufacturers, but we have several of the major TV vendors who are going to be producing 4K capable TVs – they'll be announcing them at CES,” said Hunt.

The not so surprising news here is that the Xbox One and Playstation 4 won't be able to support 4K for quite a while: “the new game consoles may eventually be 4K-capable, but the ability to take 4K out of the box and drop it into a separate television is lacking some standards and HDMI 2.0, and it's just a little premature. So we probably will see that, but right now we're talking about 4K Netflix built into the smart TV.”

KitGuru Says: It looks like the TV manufacturers have Netflix on board and helping push 4K to consumers. Netflix is certainly in a good position to do that since it both supplies and creates content.
