Cheap Android tablets just keep getting cheaper

Over the last few months we've seen plenty of cheap Android tablets come out: Tesco came out with the Hudl, Argos released the ‘MyTablet‘ and Asda partnered up with electronics company, Medion, to exclusively sell the ‘LifeTab‘. Prices of these tablets currently range from £77 all the way up to £130 and the reviews weren't great but you wouldn't expect much from a sub £100 tablet. However, now we have something even cheaper as Datawind releases the UbiSlate 7Ci tablet, coming in at just £30.

The UbiSlate 7Ci packs a 1GHz processor and just 512mb RAM, but it will also include a complimentary 4GB of internal storage which is expandable with a micro SD card. The Slate also includes WiFi which is something that you would normally assume to be included but this is a £30 tablet we are talking about, so it's a welcome extra. The device also has an 800 x 480 7 Inch TFT screen which will probably be horrible to look at but you can't ask for too much if you're only spending £30.

Unfortunatley, this doesn't run the latest version of Android, which was built to run smoother on low end devices such as this. Instead you'll be getting Android 4.0 ‘Ice cream Sandwhich', so expect some classic Android fragmentation and stutter.

The UbiSlate was primarily made for schools as an inexpensive learning tool, which isn't such a bad idea- I wouldn't buy iPads for a class full of kids.

KitGuru Says: Could something so inexpensive and low end really be useful? It's a nice idea but I think it might cause more frustrations and headaches over time than its worth.
