You can now stream PlayStation games to your TV

While the feature has been available since as far back as the PlayStation Vita, Sony has in recent years put an increasing amount of emphasis on its Remote Play game streaming service. As part of a new update, Android TVs running version 12 and those with a Chromecast 4K will be able to stream games directly to their TV, making the feature much more useful.

Announced as part of the most recent PlayStation 5 system software update, Hideaki Nishino – the Senior Vice President for Platform Experience at SIE – said:

“PS Remote Play allows you to stream games from your PS5 or PS4 console to another device – including smartphones and tablets (iOS and Android), PCs and Mac – over the internet or through your home network. This provides you with more options to enjoy your favorite games even when you’re away from the living room. Starting today, the PS Remote Play app will be available on devices running Android TV OS 12.”

Currently, the only devices which have been verified to work include the Chromecast with Google TV (4K model) and Sony’s own BRAVIA XR A95L model – though support will be expanded over time.

Unlike Xbox Game Pass’ streaming, Remote Play relies on the power of your console in order to stream the games – making for a slightly less practical experience. That said, this new expansion of Remote Play will be beneficial to those who have multiple TVs in their home and prefer to game on a large screen device. It will be interesting to see how Remote Play continues to evolve over time.
