Global sales of Sony PlayStation 4 surpass 5.3 million units

Just several days ahead of of the PlayStation 4 launch in Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment announced that global sales of the PS4 had surpassed 5.3 million units. The new number exceeds the amount of the latest consoles that Sony originally planned to sell during the fiscal year 2014 and underlines unprecedented success of the PlayStation 4 among core gamers.

Sony Corp. sold through 5.3 million PlayStation 4 units worldwide as of the 8th of February, 2014, so actual life-to-date sales of the PS4 are even higher. Moreover, as Sony starts to sell the new console in Japan on the 22nd of February, expect total sell-through number to increase to over six million units by early next week.

“I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season,” said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

Sony originally intended to sell five million PlayStation 4 consoles during the fiscal 2014 (which ends on the 31st of March, 2014). By now, the planned number has been exceeded and it looks like the company will sell considerably more than expected just about half a year ago. For comparison, only 3.53 million of PlayStation 3 consoles were sold during the fiscal year 2006 (ended in March ’07).

“We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States,” said Mr. House. “The PS4 system’s momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans. February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4.”

KitGuru Says: The success of the PlayStation 4 among core games is evident and is likely to be higher than Sony originally anticipated. What remains to be seen is how successful will the platform be among mainstream gamers and whether it can replicate success of the PlayStation 2 eventually.
