Samsung sells-out initial batch of Gear Fit smart-watch in 10 days

While wearable electronics gadgets in general and smart-watches in particular remain a mystery for the vast majority of users, the interest towards such gadgets seem to be growing. A media report claims that Samsung Electronics has sold-out the first batch of the Gear Fit smart-band, the most affordable product of such kind from Samsung.

Samsung produced from 200 thousand to 250 thousand of the Gear Fit for the global market and sold out the initial batch in just ten days, reports MK.co.kr web-site. Approximately 25 thousand units were sold on the South Korean market, every single smart-watch was sold out. Market observers believe that rapid adoption of the Gear Fit underlines growing popularity of wearable electronics.

Samsung Gear Fit is the most affordable smartwatch in the Gear family of such devices. The device costs $199, it is sleek and lightweight, yet it has decent screen unlike its rivals, such as Nike Fuel Band. In general, the Gear Fit is more like an extremely advanced fitness tracker, not a fully-fledged smart-watch. The device runs a proprietary real-time operating system (RTOS), which means that hardly a lot of 3rd party apps will be available for the device. Officially, Samsung calls Gear Fit an “ultimate modern fitness solution”, but claims that is is much more than just another fitness band.

The Samsung Gear Fit features 1.84” curved super AMOLED (432*128 resolution) screen as well as integrated accelerometer, gyro and heart rate sensors. The smart-band features integrated pedometer, exercise, heart rate, sleep, stopwatch and timer micro-applications. The device can notify people about incoming calls, emails, SMS, alarm, S-planner, run certain 3rd party apps and so on.

Samsung did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: The Gear Fit is positioned as a fitness tracker, not a smart-watch, but comes with extremely advanced functionality, which is why it seems to be a highly-successful product in its category. It will be interesting to learn how many Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smart-watches based on Tizen operating system Samsung manages to sell in the first month of availability. The first-gen Galaxy Gear was not a success in terms of sell-through numbers because of the high price, limited functionality and other reasons, many of which are not resolved in the Gear 2.
