LaCie, a subsidiary of Seagate Technology, this week introduced the world’s fastest consumer-class external storage solution that will allow to edit ultra-high-definition video in the field. The new LaCie Little Big Disk features Thunderbolt 2 interface and read speed of up to whopping 1375MB/s. As usual, the speed comes at a price.
LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 features two 500GB solid-state drives with PCI Express interface inside that work in RAID 0 mode and can provide read performance of up to 1375MB/s and write performance of up to 1180MB/s when the solution is plugged to a MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro with Thunderbolt 2 interface. Such data transfer rates are enough for editing 4K video in the field, but two of LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 storage solutions can also work in parallel to deliver whopping 2600MB/s read performance.
In a bid to ensure rock-solid stability, LaCie had to organize proper heat dissipation for the SSDs inside the case. The company added two heat–dissipating aluminum plates in addition to a larger, thermo-regulated fan. This means that the fan only turns on when necessary, and when it does, it produces nearly zero noise, according to the company
The new Little Big Disk, featuring Thunderbolt 2, is available in 1TB capacity through the LaCie online store and LaCie resellers starting at $1299.99 (MSRP). The UK price is £1059. [yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PocrZUJezCc']
KitGuru Says: With such extreme performance, LaCie’s Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 can indeed be the world’s fastest external storage solution. Moreover, this external solution is nearly two times faster than MacBook Pro’s internal solid-state drive.
