AMD Radeon R9 295X2: pictured, specifications revealed

A Chinese web-site has published what it claims to be the first image of the Radeon R9 295X2 graphics card. The cooling system of the new dual-GPU flagship graphics adapter code-named Vesuvius looks similar to a teaser published by AMD on Monday, so the product may actually be the real one.

The Radeon R9 295×2 will carry two AMD Hawaii graphics processors in full configuration with 2816 stream processors (176 texture units, 64 raster operating units, 512-bit memory bus) as well as 8GB or 16GB of GDDR5 memory (2*4GB or 2*8GB), reports ChipHell web-site. The total amount of execution units of the graphics solution is 5632 stream processors, 352 texture units and 128 raster operating units. The graphics board sports two 8-pin PCIe power connectors and therefore can consume up to 375W of power. The model R9 295X2 is very long and will require enthusiast-class PC cases.

As rumoured, the graphics card will feature a hybrid cooling solution akin to those from Asetek or Corsair, which relies on both liquid and air cooling technologies. While efficiency of such cooling is indisputable, it may be quite noisy.

Final clock-rates of the Radeon R9 295 X2’s GPUs and memory are unknown, but they will mean a lot. Thanks to efficient cooling solution, AMD has a lot of freedom when it comes to frequencies of the graphics card’s components. In case AMD wants it, it can try to make the world’s highest-performing graphics card by boosting clock-rates. In case AMD decides to concentrate on providing the right combination of performance, low-noise and price, it can do this as well. All-in-all, it seems that AMD’s Radeon R9 295X2 should be able to compete against its arch-rival from Nvidia Corp., the GeForce GTX Titan Z.

Pricing of the AMD Radeon R9 295×2 remains to be seen. At present there are rumours about the recommended price of $1499 (£900, €1085), but as we get closer to launch, it may be altered.

AMD did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Now that we understand the basics about the Radeon R9 295 X2, we are eager to see the first performance results. It should not take long before they leak as well.

  1. Awesome, maybe KGs Ominous AMD silver case can confirm this! Time shall tell. I always look forward to the x2 gpu chip cards. I never buy them because of price (obviously going to be high) But the benchmarks they bring are awesome to see.

Hmm, it that’s legit. I like the cooling solution too. I am sure the card would need it as well going by the temps of the latest single GPU cards.

    Looking forward to seeing more.
