Sony will charge PS5 Slim buyers an extra £25 for vertical stand

Sony unveiled its first proper PS5 revision this week, with a new, slimmer model that shrinks the overall volume of the console by around 30 percent. The new version also moves to a modular disc-drive design, allowing Digital Edition buyers to save money on their initial purchase and pick up the disc drive attachment later on. There are some less positive changes here though, as the new PS5 will not ship with the vertical stand.

The original PS5 model shipped with a stand that could hold the system up horizontally, or vertically. However, the new PS5 Slim will only ship with a tiny little kickstand for horizontal positioning. If you want to stand the console upright, you'll need to spend an extra £25 to buy Sony's official vertical stand.

In the gallery below, you can see the new PS5 model with its new vertical stand, offered as a separate purchase and not part of the console package. Alongside an image of the included vertical stand, next to the original PS5 model.

Given that this new PS5 model has likely shaved off some production costs, the fact that a stand isn't included is somewhat baffling. If that wasn't bad enough, Sony actually raised the price of both PS5 consoles and there does not seem to be any intention to bring the price back down anytime soon, outside of perhaps a holiday season sale.

The PS5 Slim will become available in November in the US, before spreading to other regions. The Digital version costs £389.99 while the disc-version costs £479.99. The disc drive attachment costs $79.99 on its own in the US, but £99.99 here in the UK. Meanwhile, the additional kickstand costs $30 in the US and £25 here in the UK.

KitGuru Says: With Xbox being weak for so long, Sony has had an opportunity to solidify its position in the console market and this is the end result – higher prices and removed features.
