A former dictator is suing Activision

Manuel Noriega, a former Panamanian dictator is suing Activision over his likeness being used in Call of Duty Black Ops 2, the latest game in the series to be developed by Treyarch. The case is similar to that of Lindsey Lohan suing Rockstar over her likeness being used in Grand Theft Auto V.

Noriega and his lawyers are claiming that his likeness in the game somehow boosted its overall popularity and sales without his consent. Noriega is the central character to the “Suffer With Me” mission, in which the player has to track him down. Activision is being charged with “blatant misuse, unlawful exploitation and misappropriation for economic gain.”

According to Courthouse News, the lawsuit also says: “Plaintiff was portrayed as an antagonist and portrayed as the culprit of numerous fictional heinous crimes, creating the false impression that defendants are authorized to use plaintiff's image and likeness. This caused plaintiffs to receive profits they would not have otherwise received.”

KitGuru Says: Did any of you guys genuinely play Black Ops 2 because you thought that an ex dictator might be featured in the game? I'm pretty sure his likeness in the game didn't boost sales or popularity, I'm also sure that nobody brought GTA V because they thought Lindsey Lohan might be in it

I think this is pathetic and clearly a bid to make money, i was completely unaware of the character looking similar. I wouldnt have bought the game based on knowing he was similar to that character. This is pathetic. Yet southpark still airs and this is worth a lawsuit.

  2. Well, short of rereleasing the same game sans Noriega, you cannot actually prove it did not contribute in any way to the sales. Oh wait. This is Call of Duty we’re talking about. That is all they do, rerelease the same game.

  4. I said it in the lindsay lohan GTA V bullshit and I’ll say it here: South Park.

  5. I wouldnt say its on the same level of the lindsay lohan case. They say that its Noriega in the game. He’s got some actual legal footing. Lohan’s got nothing. They were able to prove it wasnt of her likeness with a single paycheck.
