Sony Computer Entertainment on Tuesday announced that shipments of its PlayStation 4 video game consoles had surpassed six million units, making it one of the fastest selling Sony system ever. The number significantly exceeds the amount that the company planned to sell this fiscal year and demonstrates tremendous interest towards the platform among gamers worldwide.
Sony’s PlayStation 4 cumulatively sold through more than six million units globally as of March 2, 2014, which includes the 370 thousand units sold through in Japan since its launch on the 22nd of February. Six million units is more than five million units Sony intended to sell in the fiscal year 2013 and nearly two times more than the amount of PlayStation 3 game consoles it sold during its launch window some seven years ago.
Three main pillars of the PS4’s success are more or less affordable $399/£349/€399 price-point, broad availability worldwide as well as comprehensive support from game developers.
PS4 software sales also remain robust with more than 13.7 million copies sold in retail stores worldwide and through digital downloads on PlayStation Store as of March 2, 2014. KitGuru Says: Despite the competition from the PC, mobile gadgets and Xbox One, Sony’s PS4 manages to set sales records thanks to high demand from core gamers. But will casual gamers like the console as much as expert gamers? Only time will tell.
The price is fucking stupid. In Denmark the cheapest one atm is 3500 DKK, which is equivalent to $649/€469/£386. They should start selling it for the same price across the globe instead of getting their money from the rich countries and losing money in the poorer regions.
