Toshiba Corp. this week unveiled the industry’s first 15.6” laptop with ultra-high-definition display that has earned Technicolor colour certification. The laptop is designed for both creative professionals as well as multimedia enthusiasts who want to enjoy video, photos and applications in resolution never available before on laptops.
The new Toshiba Satellite P55t features 15.6 display with touch capabilities as well as 3840*2160 (4K, UHD) resolution (282 pixels per inch, retina-class screen). Additional details about the display are unknown, but it is possible that it uses IGZO UHD panel produced by Sharp, which was announced last year. If this is the case, then availability of the Satellite P55t will depend on Sharp’s output. In case Toshiba decided to stick to more traditional TN panel, then expect limited viewing angles and other peculiarities of TN from the new laptop.
Each Ultra HD display of the new Toshiba Satellite P55t is individually calibrated by Chroma Tune software and is Technicolor-certified during production to realize natural colour expression with an accurate colour gamut to ensure true-to-life imagery. Users themselves can personalize and manage individual colour space control and apply profiles to a variety of software applications.
“Our colour certification team worked closely with the engineering team at Toshiba to ensure the highest levels of colour calibration on this laptop’s display,” said Manuele Wahl, senior vice president of licensing at Technicolor. “We applied the same rigor of testing and calibration used on major motion pictures to ensure not only that photographers and videographers now see what they shot in perfect colour, but consumers can also experience 4K film and videos as Hollywood directors intended.”
The new Toshiba Satellite P55t is based on Intel Core i7 quad-core “Haswell” microprocessor and is equipped with AMD Radeon R9 M265X graphics solution with 2GB GDDR5 memory, up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, 1TB hard drive, Blu-ray burner, Wi-Fi 802.11ac wireless network card and so on. The laptop can output 4K video via HMDI port to external monitors or TVs. The Satellite P55t is equipped with high-quality Harman Kardon stereo speakers, which should make multimedia enthusiasts glad. The notebook uses Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro operating system with the latest updates.
To complement the display’s broad range of colours, the Satellite P55t 4K Ultra HD model includes a full version of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 software.
The new Satellite P55t 4K Ultra HD will be available on the 22nd of April, 2014, direct from Toshiba starting from $1499.99. The price in Europe and the U.K. will be announced at a later date.

KitGuru Says: Toshiba’s new Satellite P55t is the first 4K laptop from a leading brand. It is highly likely that other manufacturers will follow the Japanese conglomerate shortly. For example, Apple is projected to introduce MacBook Pro, iMac and a display with 4K resolution later this year.
