Tekken is one of the most iconic fighting game franchises, with the series even receiving a Guinness world record for having the “longest-running video game storyline without any substantial development gaps or reboots”. With Tekken 8 on the horizon, the team at Bandai Namco have revealed another major milestone achieved by the franchise – having now sold over 50 million copies.
In an interview conducted by Gamesindustry.biz, Bandai Namco Europe’s CEO ‘Arnaud Muller’ spoke on a number of topics ranging from Elden Ring to Little Nightmares. In discussing the upcoming Tekken 8, Muller revealed that the series had reached a new milestone, saying:
“And then [we have] a very small title called Tekken 8 which you may have heard of. [Tekken] has sold more than 50 million copies as an IP, and Tekken 7 sold ten million copies. So, it’s going to be great, it’s going to be big. [It] really takes the fighting genre to a new level… This is as good as it gets in terms of making the best of Unreal Engine, and being able to polish the game to a level where visually, it looks stunning. We have big expectations [for] Tekken 8.”
50 million copies sold puts Tekken roughly in-line with Street Fighter sales-wise, and while it falls short of some of its contemporaries such as Mortal Kombat and Super Smash Bros. (80 million and 70~ million respectively) it is still a massive achievement worth celebrating. It will be interesting to see how many copies Tekken 8 sells when it launches on the 26th of January next year.
