50 EA games due to have their servers shut down

GameSpy announced that it was shutting down last month and as a result, a lot of games are having their multiplayer servers shut down. Game Ranger recently announced that it would save a few but some titles are bound to slip through the cracks. EA is going to be one of the biggest publishers to have its games hit by the shutdown with 50 games due to go offline in June.

EA previously stated that it would attempt to transition some of its bigger titles such as the Battlefield games, to a new server host but it looks like its researchers came up empty as some popular titles like Crysis 2, Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 are due to go offline.

EA announced the full list of games affected on its website coupled with a statement: “Since GameSpy's announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running. Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June.”

“We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games. We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don't have anything to announce.”

Game Ranger is still trying to prioritise which games its going to add support for first but there's so many that it could be a long process. We may see support for Crysis, Battlefield and Command&Conquer brought back sooner rather than later but there's no telling for sure just yet. You can see the full list of games affected, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Not many people liked Gamespy but it did power a lot of popular games so its shutdown is bound to have a huge impact. Hopefully community driven multiplayer solutions will pop up soon, we already know that Game Ranger is trying its best. Are there any games on the list that you guys would like to see saved?
