SanDisk rolls-out super-fast SSDs with SAS-12Gb/s interface

SanDisk Corp. on Wednesday unveiled a new breed of high-performance solid-state drives for enterprise-class systems. The drives boast up to 1GB/s read speed, Serial Attached SCSI interface with 12Gb/s maximum bandwidth and increased endurance thanks to SLC NAND memory and SanDisk's proprietary technologies..

SanDisk Lightning II family of solid-state drives is based on single-level cell (SLC) NAND flash memory produced using 19nm process technology, which is one of the most reliable types of flash memory available today. The drives utilise proprietary controllers and firmware and are available in different capacities from 200GB to 1.6TB. The SSDs provide up to 1000MB/s read speed, up to 600MB/s write speed and can perform up to 190 000 input/output operations per second (IOPS).

The Lightning II lineup of mission critical solid-state drives comes in three flavours – Ultra, Ascend and Eco – that are tailored for particular needs and provide different capacities, performance levels and endurance.

The new Lightning Gen. II SSD product family doubles interface speeds over previously available 6Gb/s SSDs, providing the highest bandwidth possible for mission-critical and virtualized data center application workloads. Additionally, the Lightning Gen. II family of drives has a robust design that provides error correction and detection technology, full data path protection, instant secure erase, thermal monitoring, and die fail recovery.

The drives feature five-year warranty over which SanDisk guarantees predictable performance and superior reliability. Thanks to usage of SLC NAND memory that can sustain up to 100 thousand write/erase cycles per cell, the drives should really work very fast for a long time.

The Lightning Gen. II 12Gb/s SAS SSD family of solid-state druves will be available for sampling with select OEM customers and through the channel in the third quarter of 2014.
