Sony CEO sees wearable gaming devices in the future

At present the majority of wearable computing devices are designed mostly as extensions of smartphones. However, in the future wearables could work with other electronics, including cameras, game consoles and so on, according to Kazuo Hirai, chief executive officer of Sony Corp.

Nowadays Sony offers smart-watch and smart wristbands that work with its smartphones, but going forward Sony will offer other types of wearable devices. In fact, wearable gadgets that work with other gear including PlayStation consoles “have a lot of potential to make it a more exciting ecosystem,” said Kazuo Hirai in an interview with PCWorld. “It’s not just the wearable but it’s in fact an extension of a lot of the product experiences that we bring to consumers today.”

While Mr. Hirai did not announce exact plans or products, he said that Sony does have a vision regarding wearable electronics. However, he made it clear that the rules of the new market are yet to be written.

“It already is, perhaps, a very crowded market,” said the head of Sony. “I think the jury’s still out on exactly what the right wearable consumer experience is… We have a vision of where we want to take it, but we don’t know whether that’s the right one. We don’t know whether Google has the right answer. Everyone is scrambling for that right consumer experience at this point.”

One of the first wearable devices made for gaming will be Sony’s project Morpheus virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4 game console. Later on Sony may offer its own smart eye-wear akin to Google Glass, though, it is unlikely that the device will be designed only with games in mind.

KitGuru Says: Keeping in mind the fact that Sony has a lot of strengths in the field of video games, it is logical for the company to use its valuable assets on the market of wearables as well. However, it should be kept in mind that those assets did not really help Sony on the market of smartphones several years ago…
