Game Ranger is saving multiplayer from Gamespy shutdown

Gamespy recently announced that it would be shutting down its servers which consequently made the multiplayer features on a lot of games obsolete. Some publishers chose to save their more recent titles that people still play but a lot of older titles would still be shut off from multiplayer. Fortunately, Game Ranger is stepping in to save some key titles.

Star Wars Battlefront II and Halo 1 are among the first announced to be getting Game Ranger support, meaning those of you who bought Battlefront II in the recent steam sale will still be able to play online. Game Ranger is an add supported third part tool that allows users to join multiplayer lobbies for some games.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Game Ranger creator, Scott Kevill said that several publishers have already been in touch with him: “They're generally very thankful because often these situations are not in their control, Sometimes the original development teams have dissolved and so on.”

Kevill is currently going through the list of games affected by Gamespy's sudden shutdown and prioritising which ones to support first: “Things have been a little crazy over the last few weeks, and trying to prioritise which ones are supported first is challenging, I've been talking with a few companies that have been very helpful in supplying any info I need to make it easier to keep their games going.”

He also feels very strongly about keeping this games going, saying that “These games need to live on forever, they are a part of history,” “Even if someone isn't a regular player anymore, it's understandable that they'd be upset that they can't someday go back an re-live an experience even if they wanted to.”

KitGuru Says: I've used Game Ranger for a few years now to play Battle for Middle Earth after the multiplayer component for that game died. It's good to see that there is someone with the know-how out there willing to keep these games alive even if the player base has reduced significantly. Have any of you guys used Game Ranger? Will you use it now that Game Spy is closing its doors?

KitGuru Games: Omni-movement culminates 30 years of FPS innovation

Black Ops 6 is officially here, bringing the innovative new Omni-movement system to the game. While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.
