Apple Mac Pro finally ships immediately after purchase

Apple has finally managed to solve the issues with availability of its high-end Mac Pro workstations. At present the systems can be purchased and obtained in several days. Previously it took Apple up to six weeks to ship its flagship desktops to their owners.

Although the Apple Mac Pro was formally released in December, 2013, up to recently it took Apple a long time to ship the systems to customers. Only recently the company cut the Mac Pro delivery time from five or six weeks to three to five business days in its online stores in the U.S. and the U.K.

The new Mac Pro not only features a state-of-the-art cylindrical design that consists of numerous non-standard components, but it also dramatically increases performance compared to the previous-generation Mac Pros and brings in loads of new technologies, including the Thunderbolt, high-end solid-state drives, massive amounts of memory, etc.

The reasons behind long delivery times of Mac Pro are not particularly clear. Since the systems feature numerous unique components, the shortage of just one piece made specifically for the Mac Pro by a contract manufacturer could ruin shipments schedules for the desktop.

Buyers of the Apple Mac Pro are professionals who can afford such computers and who are willing to buy the new workstations, but up until recently they had to wait for weeks or months for their systems. While the demand for the workstations definitely existed in Q1, either it was not really strong, or Apple could not ship enough units. Since Mac Pro desktops cost starting from $2999 or £2499, their volume shipments would have an effect on Apple’s financial results. Based on Apple’s report for the second quarter of its fiscal 2014 (which is generally the calendar Q1 2014), Apple’s Mac revenue did not improve really significantly compared to previous periods. Shipments of Apple Mac personal computers were 4.136 million units in the Q2 of FY2014, up 4.65% year-over-year; average selling price of a Mac was $1334 (£804, €987), roughly flat compared to the previous quarters. It looks like not a lot of Mac Pros were shipped in the Q2 FY2014.

It is noteworthy that while Apple itself can ship the Mac Pro desktops in three to five business days, its resellers (such as Mac Mall) still offer to wait for five or six weeks for most configurations.
