Nvidia and partners start sales of the GeForce GTX Titan Z

Nvidia Corp. and its partners on Wednesday officially announced the immediate availability of the GeForce GTX Titan Z. The new graphics card is based on two Nvidia GK110 graphics processing units and is expected to be the highest-performing graphics board in the world. The solution is also the globe’s most expensive consumer graphics card: it costs $2999 in the U.S., £2399.99 in the UK and around €3000 in Europe.

The formal launch of the GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics card was delayed at least two times in the recent weeks because of inefficient drivers, according to various media reports. This week Nvidia finally released its latest WHQL drivers that promise to unleash the full performance potential of the dual-chip flagship graphics board.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan Z is powered by two Nvidia GK110 GPUs in their full configuration with 2880 stream processors, 240 texture units and 48 raster operations pipelines. The graphics processors operate at 705MHz in default mode and 876MHz in “boost” mode. The board features 12GB of GDDR5 memory (6GB with 384-bit bus per GPU) that operates at 7.0GHz effective clock-rate. In total, the Titan Z sports 5760 stream processors and can deliver around 8TFLOPS of single-precision compute performance. For those, who feel that two GK110 GPUs are not enough, the new dual-chip graphics board supports SLI technology that allows installation of two GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics cards into one PC.

Just like the rest GeForce GTX graphics adapters, the Titan Z supports the latest industry-standard technologies (e.g., DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.4, OpenCL 1.5) as well as Nvidia-exclusive capabilities (e.g., 3D Vision, PhysX, SLI TXAA Nvidia Surround, G-Sync, GameStream, etc.).

The GeForce GTX Titan Z sports a large air cooling solution that needs three slots of space, hence, the graphics card will hardly fit into smaller PC cases. Nvidia claims that the board requires up to 375W of power and thus needs two 8-pin supplementary power connectors. The board has one dual-link DVI-I, one dual-link DVI-D, one HDMI and one DisplayPort outputs.

Just like its main competitor, the Radeon R9 295X2, the GeForce GTX Titan Z is designed exclusively for gamers and PC enthusiasts who demand to have absolutely the best hardware possible. Owners of the Titan Z will use it to play the latest video games in 4K (3840*2160) resolution (or in lower resolutions with anti-aliasing turned on) with all the eye candy enabled.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics card is available virtually everywhere in the world, but in limited quantities in some places, based on several checks with retailers. In the U.K. the dual-chip Titan Z graphics cards can be acquired from Chillblast, Dabs, Novatech, Overclockers.co.uk, Scan and YoYoTech. In the U.S. the GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics boards are available from Amazon, NCIX, TigerDirect, EVGA and a host of premium system builders.

KitGuru Says: While Nvidia promises that its GeForce GTX Titan Z will be the fastest graphics card in the world, it remains to be seen whether the $3000 board will actually beat its less expensive arch-rival, the AMD Radeon R9 295X2 (which costs $1500) in ultra-high-definition resolutions. Stay tuned and KitGuru’s lab will let you know the test results in the near future!
