SEGA appears to be going through a bit of a shake-up, as the publisher has cancelled a number of projects. The biggest cancellation impacts Creative Assembly's upcoming shooter, Hyenas, but several unannounced projects have also been axed.
In an investor note published this week, Sega warned shareholders that it expects to record a loss for the financial year, as the publisher faces lower profits in Europe. Now, Sega is undergoing “structural reforms aimed at increasing efficiency”. This means exactly what you would expect, project cancellations and lay-offs.
Hyenas was first announced last summer and a new trailer was released in mid-August, seemingly indicating that the game is progressing towards release. Earlier this year, Sega labelled Hyenas as a challenging title and now, it would seem they no longer believe the project is worth the investment to see through to the finish line.
As a result of the cancellation, a source speaking with IGN claimed that the entire Hyenas team at Creative Assembly faces redundancy. However, lay-offs will likely impact other parts of the company as well. It is possible that Sega is planning to shave off employee counts at some of its other studios too so we should hear more in the months ahead.
