Payday 3's always-online requirements led to a rough launch weekend, with many being unable to access the game due to connectivity issues. Starbreeze has already confirmed that the third-party matchmaking service it implemented wasn't working as planned. Now due to the launch, the developers are considering adding an option for offline play.
Many always-online games have had troubled launches, so typically when gamers see that a game requires an internet connection to play, it does cause a certain amount of controversy. In the case of Payday 3, this was made worse by the fact that the first two games in the series did have offline modes and a good number of players did enjoy going on solo heists.
Looking ahead, Starbreeze says it has “a lot of diligent and consistent work ahead to regain community trust”. Part of this work does include “looking at the possibility to add some sort of offline mode”, as confirmed on Twitter by Starbreeze CEO, Tobias Sjögren.
This is not confirmation that offline play will definitely be implemented but it is better than nothing. Hopefully in a few months time, Starbreeze will be able to give more concrete answers on this subject.
