Far Cry 4 is expected to be one of the best-looking video games ever made, judging by the trailers that Ubisoft published earlier this month. What is somewhat surprising is that according to a representative of the game developer, the game will look equally good on all modern platforms, including the PC, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.
Alex Hutchinson, the creative director of Ubisoft Montreal, said in an interview with Major Nelson, that the ultra-high graphics setting of the Far Cry 4 on the PC will look exactly the same as the game will look on the new-generation consoles.
“Because we develop [Far Cry] on the PC, you’ve never really seen on console the ultra-high PC version before,” said Mr. Hutchinson, reports Softpedia. “So even out of the box, even day one, we just stuck the code on the new consoles and we were able to dial it all the way up. So as a console player you’re already getting by far the best version we can ship.”
While graphics processing units of Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4 are based on the same GCN [graphics core next] architecture that powers the AMD Radeon graphics cards, modern gaming graphics boards for personal computers offer considerably higher performance than the GPUs in the consoles do.
On the one hand, it is good to know that the owners of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One will get premium quality graphics in Far Cry 4. On the other hand, if a game looks the same on platforms with very different graphics processing capabilities, it means that it does not fully utilise capabilities of modern PCs. A shiny new AMD Radeon R9 295X2 just has to show better graphics than a game console. On the other hand, Mr. Hutchinson said no word about resolutions, antialiasing and some other details that greatly influence the image quality in general.
“We want the gameplay experience to be the same on all platforms so we're leaning on technical differences,” said the creative director of Ubisoft Montreal. “Everything you see, whether it’s the fur on the animals, the grass on the ground or the leaves on the trees. All these things are bumped up a huge amount in the next gen version.”

KitGuru Says: Keeping in mind that game developers pretty often reveal rather strange information, we should wait and see how everything turns out. Perhaps, Ubisoft wanted ultra-high-quality graphics to be displayed at 720p resolution at 30fps framerate on the consoles. Obviously, a picture at 720p resolution could look the same on different platforms, but gaming PCs will simply deliver considerably higher performance in this situation. On the other hand, there is an ongoing scandal about downgraded graphics quality in the Watch Dogs version for PC; maybe, something similar is going to happen to the Far Cry 4.
here we go, watch dogs 2.0
something similar? something exactly the same…
i would expect that, in a year, the secret Microsoft and Sony deals hit the media. Paying off devs to make PC’s as inferior as their 3 year old obscure hardware.
After Ubishit’s Watch Dogs hidden graphics I expect nothing good…
translation = graphics will look crappy on PC
good That means that I can run this game with a video integrated of a intel hd 1000?!! 😀 and the most important in ultra graffics!! xD xD
I love these screenshots though, the game may look amazing but you can still notice that it’s far from photo realism which, to me, isn’t a bad thing at all! The detail is impeccable but the colours! Oh the colour are so vivid and beautiful, them mountains actually look very refreshing too. The blood from the chicken really stands out and there’s no soft shading around it as if to show weight and contact with the ground, but that doesn’t matter. The colours are very attractive overall and just like World of Warcraft they will pull in a huge HUGE audience captivated by the graphics and colours. Assuming the gameplay and story is as great as Far Cry 3, I see this being a comical smash hit of a game that will have people making parody movies for a long time 🙂
ubisoft: trying to keep consoles relevant as PC gaming becomes more popular
ubisoft: reducing development time on the PC
ubisoft: trying to make PC gamers hate them
“the game will look equally good on all modern platforms, including the PC, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One” so considering how powerful modern PC’s are i guess they will be downgrading the PC version in this game too eh ?
Hutchinson is obviously full of shit.
Current mid range PC GPU are already double the rendering power of the next gen consoles… What he REALLY meant is “You’ll get the same shitty visual quality as on console, but at useless high frame rate”.
Artificial visual quality capping on PC seem to be considered an acceptable business practice by Ubisoft. The bottom line is “the lowest denominator wins”
This game is going to be great and I’ll be getting it on PS4. I fully expect the graphics to be breathtaking but I’m afraid it’s a bit of a stretch to believe the statement that it will look as good as a PC on ultra high. The PC will have higher quality AA so it should look superior.
Mind you the PC version of Watch Dogs was the same as the PS4 version, but I don’t buy into the downgrade thing. The image quality of Watch Dogs is superb on PS4. It comes very close to matching the E3 PC tech demo, which wasn’t as good as the myth makes out by the way, and in some areas surpassed it. I don’t see it as a downgrade with stuff missing, I see it more as some things were removed in order to include something else of equal merit in its place.
The only area it fell short was the lack of a full blown bokeh depth of field effect. Overall, the graphics in Watch Dogs is very impressive. I’ve seen comparisons showing the cars in the E3 tech demo and the cars in later videos, but to be honest the cars in the final game are flawless, maybe not exactly the same but equally good.
Watch dogs looked so bad i have no idea why people think otherwise i mean the tree’s alone look horrible i remember thinking of godfather 2 the game when i saw them. Also the textures are gross to. I never thought the game looked so good. Now GTA5 for the PS4-PC will look great. I actually thought farcry 3 looked amazing as well 4 well only look better. To be honest as long as it looks good and plays good i don’t care if the PC is the same i doubt it will be with higher FPS on the PC and such i could never play this game at 30FPS and have fun for long i tried it on my PC with farcry 3 and i was like man this feels so bad
Im just hoping my PC will run it smooth on high settings, my 4.2Ghz quad should be fine, but my Nvidia GTX 660 might struggle a bit, all depends on how well optimized the game is.
Um, resolution. /thread.
idiots.
If a fairly loaded PC won’t do any better than it does on a console, they held things back. Simple as that.
I ran FC3 on my 660ti (My processor’s a 4.0 oct core) on Ultra at 1920×1200, 60fps. If anything, this one should still do the same at High, or Ultra at 40fps.
I might build a PC with fair specs do you think I will be able to run far cry 4 at ultra settings?
Specs:
i5 Quad Core
GeForce GT 640 VRAM 2gb
8GB Ram
MotherBoard OC 2400mhz
SSD 120GB
…so basically, I’ll be able to run it at 4K/60 with my two year-old 680s. If it looks the same on all three platforms, that means that the game was designed for Xbox One’s 7770-7790…a GPU that is so relatively weak that it literally isn’t even classifiable as a “gaming” GPU, as of 2014. That means that this game, while no doubt inclusive of impressive style and art, won’t actually “look” good by modern standards. It will look like a game designed for XBOX One, or a game designed for a low-spec desktop application GPU from a few years ago. In other words, this game will be less visually impressive than Far Cry 3, which requires most of both of my 680s at 1080/60/4x MSAA (this is about 5x the GPU of XBOX One, incidentally).
In other words, Far Cry 4 is a bust for mid to high-end PC owners. Not a shocker.
For me personally this game probably will look sick and be fun however PC games have always bumped up quality to be better then consoles just how it is least from what I can tell . A big part of that is a game being optimized for each individual platform so to have this look the same on all is very odd in my opinion, I was never planning to pre-order this game but all that I have read and the similar Call of Duty gameplay in some of the trailers – some of it being so similar it looks like it was copied haha-(also one trailer showed the guns having no recoil what’s up with that ? ) it will be interesting what happens with this game.

Everything is good but the GPU is too weak.
That’s a funny claim, friend. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/far-cry-3-performance-benchmark,3379-6.html says you’d have about half that.

The dude is trolling you, bruh.
the pc version should look, and run substantially better, given that its run on a pc with adequate graphics. Like in FC3 my pc on ultra, makes the console version look outdated. Consoles are more practical for the price point, but compared to a decent pc, their is a substantial difference in quality and fps. Although consoles have made a mini catchup with the next gen consoles, about half way their 🙂
pc’s have a few extra graphical inputs as well as 1920×1080 resolution, which makes a huge difference, both in visuals and fps. But you pay a lot more dollars for the gain in fidelity
What bunch of B.S. my respect for Ubisoft is getting lower everyday. It obvious they are downgrading the PC versions to match the consoles. Watch Dogs is proof of that.
wait till the 18th until you start complaining, and i don’t think this article is based on credible advice. Im sure the developer is just saying what the console fanboys want to hear
I bought a computer two years ago from Costco, and it’s still about the fastest gaming rig you can buy. I should be able to run this game full blast. And good luck trying to beat me in PvP. I’ve also got the fastest internet that money can buy with Comcast. Boom. Quick scope. You’re dead.
Most likely he doesn’t run AA which would almost double his FPS. Not to mention, that review was done when the game launched. Nvidia released several drivers that improved some GPU’s performance by up to 30%. AnandTechs review said the GTX 660ti would get 37 fps avg with AA and 58 fps avg without AA @ 1080p Ultra. http://anandtech.com/bench/product/860
Nah, basically means it looks bad and a cock on wheels can optimize it better. Remember ACU?
turns out it runs like shit on pc… yet another typical ubisoft title.

Do you think this would struggle or work great ? My PC
Specs:
Processor/ AMD FX-8120 ( 8 core )
Video Card/ Gigabyte radeon R9 270x 4.1 gb gddr 5
Ram/ 10 gb ram ddr 3 clock 1866 mhz
mother board/ Asus CM1855
Hard Drive/ 2 Terabyte HDD
Yup…..Shows how much you can trust Ubisoft…..Again
Just to go back to this:
It was bullshit. High settings on PC look leaps and bounds better than the XBO.
