Nvidia rumored to reveal GTX 880 next month

Recent rumors are all pointing towards a GTX 880 reveal before the end of the year but it could happen sooner than you think as Nvidia is apparently planning a press event for next month, at which the company will reveal its Maxwell architecture and new flagship graphics card.

However, despite the impending launch of this new architecture, we might not see a huge performance improvement over the current 700 series. According to Videocardz, the GTX 880 will launch with 4GB of video memory and a 256-bit interface, although we expect to see 8GB variants released later on.

Current rumors also suggest that Nvidia might be launching its card at the sub- $500 price point, which would work out at around £360 here in the UK with tax included. Interestingly enough, the board design of the 880 apparently has more in common with the GTX 770, despite it replacing the 780.

This would make the GM204 graphics chip a replacement for the GK104 rather than the GK110, which means it may not be much faster than the high end Kepler GPU's currently on the market.

KitGuru Says: It looks like we can expect a new wave of graphics cards to hit later this year. While these rumors do suggest that we might not see a huge performance improvement, we do recommend that you wait for the reviews to come out before making any judgments. Maxwell does have incredibly low power consumption features as we have mentioned before in our GTX 750Ti reviews. Are any of you guys planning to upgrade to the 800 series? If so, what card are you upgrading from?

  1. Might upgrade from my GTX 680 SC to a 880… Maybe. But I doubt I will notice much performance improvement, these new generations of graphics cards are like a 5-10 fps increase, I don’t see much point to be perfectly honest. My 680 can still handle games that come out now and can run most things on ultra at roughly 60 fps, which is fine for me.

  2. I currently own a GTX760 SC and might upgrade to GTX860/870 , my GTX760 has coil whine which is very annoying 😛
    I’m also thinking about the R9 280X

  3. I already bought R9 280x Msi OC edition! Its awesome. but seeing new gpu lineup from nvidia, i might change gpu again. might go with gtx 870!

  4. I’m sure not every game at 60FPS in ultra settings like Crysis 3 and Watch Dogs.

  5. Memory bandwidth just 256-Bit!! but Why??????

  6. *most*. But I don’t own those games, so I wouldn’t know anyway.

  7. fuck Nvidia, they r overpriced

  8. all Nvidia does is cheat people

  9. But in some cases, they are better. Before Mantle they were mostly better. nVidia cards also have better sub-manufactures such as EVGA, 10 year guarantee on a GPU…

  10. amd fanboy over here.

  11. with spelling like that i doubt you even have a decent gpu

  12. ^^LOL thanks for the laugh Liam! Look out everyone, we have a AMD fanboy over here.

  13. This too funny, your on a roll!

  14. Well Watch Dogs is must own game for any gamer! ofc, with Worse Mod 1.0! 😛

  15. I finally switch teams this year, red to green. All I can say there is a huge difference. I’m loving my two 780 Ti in SLI mode.

  16. I agree, Watch Dogs is a great game to own. However, Ubisoft choked on this one. Even after patches, the game still stutters and frame drops. I’m running a high end PC and still experience these issues.

    My PC Specs:

    CPU: I7 4960x OC @ 4.5
Motherboard: Asus Extreme IV Black Edition
GPU: 2x EVGA Geforce GTX 780 Ti Classified ACX Dual Bios in SLI
    Case: Corsair 600T Black
RAM: Corsair Platinum Dominators 16 GB @ 2400
SSD: Corsair GT Force 240 GB SSD
    CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i

  17. From GTX 670 probably to GTX 870.

  18. Haha…. Bro Awesome Specs! My specs are not even near to ur specs! I’m jealous! 😀 😀

  19. I want to game at 2560×1080 , so i’ll need something powerful to go with my i5 3570k 🙂

  20. Confused! 2560x 1080p or 2560x1440p?
lol. I also have i5 3570k OC @3.8GHz. but for that resolution i recommend u i7 at least with gtx 880

  21. I don’t actually play many games anymore, considering I just got a job creating them for a digital theater company, my 680 is enough to power Unity and UE4, so I don’t really mind, but it would be nice to upgrade to a 880. I’m personally more into games such as Minecraft, Space Engineers and Kerbal Space Program as compared to big AAA games such as Watch_Dogs.

  22. Antoine Corellou

    i game at 2160p with an i7 4790k,2x gtx 780OC in SLI, and a 750TI for physx.
I can run most games at 1440P just using a single gtx 780. FIFA 14 runs at 2160p on a single gtx 780.

  23. Antoine Corellou

yeah dude me too either at 1080p or 1440p and i have a nice comp too. ( frame drops a bit too much at 2160p waiting for next gen nvidia gpu to fix that. )

  24. Maybe it’s like when they released the GTX 660, they gave it a 192-bit bus width to cripple it a bit as it actually might go just under the GTX 670, but they had the GTX 660 Ti for that so that’s it.

  25. 2560x1080p 21:9 Monitor : LG25UM65-P

i7 isn’t needed for gaming as games don’t use hyperthreading and my i5 3570k@4,7 does great , it competes with a i7 4770k of my friend when it comes to gaming , he gets 2-3 fps more than me on the same gpu.

  26. Thanks, when I upgraded early this year, decided to go all out. I should be good for a few years. I just finish playing Evolve alpha over the weekend. Max settings, my PC was able to run the game 1080p 60-80 fps….So when the game if release in Oct, I should be good to go!

  27. I’m planning to upgrade my monitor to the new Asus ROG Swift PG278Q

  28. I highly doubt that.

  29. What kind of a comment is that? Do you know me personally? You must be a AMD fanboy. I’ve used AMD gpus for the last 5 years and wanted something different. After a lot of research and benchmarks, I bought two 780 Ti and very happy with the results.

  30. people are moving over to consoles because simply they’re a cheaper deal –“, the performance isn’t moving as fast as the price, I like’em both red and green, strong and cheap xD … you get the point

  31. I’m waiting forward to 870: my GTX 560 still does a good job with console ports, but definitely needs more power with PC masterpieces like The Witcher 2.

  32. ya I was personally holding off on upgrading my 760 until the 960 comes out. There will be very little difference between the 700/800 and until DX12 come out and Nvidia/AMD have muture DX12/ Win9 drivers there no point in upgrading to the 800 unless your rocking a 600 or lower. But even then if your able to hold out for atlest 12-18 more months by passing the entire 800 and wait for the 900 is the better way to go

I em thinking of getting another 760 to sli though

  33. Because memory bandwidth is bus*frequency…so if it’s high frequency memory it’ll be fine. This is the GM204 chip, too…so the “big” Maxwell will appear with the 9 series just like the 6xx and 7xx series cards.

  34. It’s only going to be $450. For that you can paint it red and throw a space heater in your case and pretend you have an AMD card!

  35. The 880 is replacing the 770, Great, It’s the 680 all over again, High end name, Mid range performance.

  36. Don’t forget high-end price

  37. محمد أشرف

no money at all…just stay with 780ti 😉

  38. محمد أشرف

    lol fantaik

  39. محمد أشرف

    are u using hd 7770?

  40. Nvidia is just like Intel, all they do is cheat people for a ridiculous amount of money for there products, they should merge together

  41. I am not saying there products are no good, I just think Nvidia is too overpriced, I would rather save some money instead of burning alot of it on a video card that gets outdated six months later and they constantly always come out with something that is supposed to be better to try to get consumers to spend even more, same shit for over a decade

  42. I am not impressed with EVGA, I had a Nvidia Geforce 560 GTX Ti 2 years ago, that card was designed cheap and flimsy and I thought that card sucked, after that I gave up on Nvidia because I was sick and tired of spending alot of money on their products

  43. I have had both Nvidia and AMD video cards for the past decade and I dont see a major difference in performance in any of them, like I said before the worst one I had was the EVGA Nvidia Geforce 560 GTX Ti, I just prefer AMD video cards because they cost less and they are just as good and I am on a budget

  44. The 560 Ti was not spending a lot, it launched at a price of £280, For any GPU that is a mid range price 😉

  45. well here in the good ol USA it is alot, and with the economy in the toilet

  46. Matti Alexander Christensen

the 880 is replacing the 860. there’s two cards on top of it in the pile. midrange card with a high end pricetag.

  47. No sorry you have the wrong information, the 880 is replacing the 770, Not the 860.

The 860 is being released along side the 880.

  48. Matti Alexander Christensen

ok, ill rephrase then. with 2 cards above the x80 in the 700 series, its effectively sitting at the slot the x60 did during the 500 series. following this trend the 880 can be expected to be positioned as the x60 series or lower, but named, priced, and branded as the x80 series.

  49. Very good tactic to mislead people, Shame companies are so dishonest.
