Satya Nadella: Microsoft is the productivity and platform company

Microsoft Corp. may be just one step before of another major strategy shift. Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of the company, said that giant's goal is not only to provide devices and services, something that his predecessor wanted to do in 2013, but to provide productivity opportunities in the new world across virtually everything that computes.

Back last year Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer of Microsoft in 2001 – 2013, outlined the Microsoft One “devices and services” strategy under which the company was supposed to become a firm with its own software and hardware – pretty much like Apple – but with a vast amount of hardware partners. That strategy seemed controversial from the very start in the PC world, but looked like a wise one when it comes to the world of computing in general.

Apparently, the new CEO of Microsoft does not believe in the “One” strategy and proposes his own, which might be called “Microsoft Everywhere.”

“At our core, Microsoft is the productivity and platform company for the mobile-first and cloud-first world,” wrote Satya Nadella in a letter to employees of Microsoft. “We will reinvent productivity to empower every person and every organization on the planet to do more and achieve more.”

Earlier this year Microsoft released its Office productivity suite for Apple iPad media tablets. Besides, the company is reportedly working on the same software for Google’s Android platform. Previously Microsoft Office was exclusive to Windows and Mac platforms, but the software giant is reconsidering it.

From now on, Microsoft does not want to be the only provider of operating systems and supporting services. It wants to be the best provider of “experiences and opportunities”.

“We have unique ability to harmonize the devices, apps, docs, data and social networks,” wrote Mr. Nadella. “Microsoft has a unique ability to harmonize the world's devices, apps, docs, data and social networks in digital work and life experiences so that people are at the center and are empowered to do more and achieve more with what is becoming an increasingly scarce commodity – time!”
