Google’s Android operating system for mobile devices passed one billion of activations in September, 2013. While the number of activations is important, it does not indicate how many customers actually use a platform. On Wednesday Android and Chrome chief Sundar Pichai revealed that over a billion of people used Google’s mobile platform in the last 30 days.
At the Google IO conference the company decided not to reveal the number of activated Google Android-based devices, but unveiled the number of customers, who actually use their devices, such as smartphones or tablets. According to Mr. Pichai, Android users check their handsets at least 100 billion times each day, send over 20 billion of text messages daily and snap 93 million selfies.
Today Google Android is the leading mobile operating system that dominates both smartphones and tablets. It is believed that around a billion of Android-based gadgets will be shipped this year alone.
Earlier this year Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple, said that the company had sold over 800 million devices based on the iOS operating system, which includes smartphones, tablets and personal digital media players. It is unclear how many active users does the iOS platform have.

KitGuru Says: Over one billion of people worldwide use smart devices based on the Google Android operating system. Probably, the mobile OS can now rival even Microsoft Corp.’s Windows in terms of installed base. With Google Android heading to wearables and TV-sets, its adoption will grow even faster from now on.
