It turns out that digital downloads made up 92 per cent of all PC game sales worldwide in 2013, according to a new analyst report. In addition, that figure is supposed to grow over the next few years.
The figures were obtained by Analyst, DFC Intelligence, which points out that these statistics don't include any hardware sales, just the games themselves. However, given that PC has been moving more and more towards digital since 2005, it's not surprising that it has almost taken over entirely.
The success of Valve's Steam platform has probably had a huge impact on the success of digital downloads on the PC platform. In the UK specifically, downloadable game sales across all platforms generated £1.18 billion last year, while physical game sales only generated £1.015 billion.
In addition, DFC has previously stated that PC gaming has overtaken console gaming in revenue, making PC the more lucrative platform.

The main reason why most games are sold digitally is because most shops like gamestop and GAME will have one shelf for games which often only sells COD and Skyrim.The bricks and morter store started to ignore us, so we in tern, ignored them.
Then again, what came first, the chicken or the egg.
Easily understandable. GAME ONLY stocks either AAA titles that have just been released, or PC games so ancient you’d be better off buying them through Gog or steam. HMV is the same. The last PC game I bought from a store was Dead Island and damn was that not worth £40…
Also it seems that for a lot of hard copy pc releases, you have to activate them on steam, origin or uplay anyway which means they’re not tradable or elegible for a refund (like dead island). Skyrim was also like this as well, although I have no regrets buying it. If they aren’t activated through steam, you have to put in the disk whenever you want to play, which I now can’t stand in a pc game.
I only tend to buy a retail copy of a game is when its a game I have been looking forward too for months most the other times I just grad it on steam or gog as a lot of the time they are cheaper
2 days ago bayonetta for ps3 (ok it was 3 euros!!! lol)(and the fucktard inside me just ignore that was for pc!!! ok last pc game that i bought was bioshock 2 last year for 5 euros i think)
My Pc doesn’t even have a disc drive so yeah.
I last bought a copy of Company of hereos 2 from a retail store, and want ta have hard copies of the games i most look forward to, like game series i have been playing for years on end. makes me all warm inside to have a physical copy of a great game.
