OpenAI reinstates CEO and brings in new board of directors

OpenAI, the company behind the increasingly popular ChatGPT AI tool, really shot itself in the foot over the weekend. At the end of last week, the board of directors chose to fire CEO, Sam Altman, leading to Microsoft swiftly offering him a CEO role at their company, while also offering to hire any OpenAI employees that wanted to join him. Over 90 percent of the company signed a letter calling on the board of directors to reverse its decision. Now, Altman has reached an agreement to return and the board responsible for the initial firing has been sent off.

OpenAI has dropped an Uno Reverse card and reached an agreement to bring Sam Altman back on board as CEO. While we have no doubt Microsoft was looking forward to Altman and a massive chunk of OpenAI employees moving over to their company, Microsoft has given Altman their blessing to return and retain the status quo prior to last week's events. This means there will be no impact on Microsoft's close partnership with OpenAI and OpenAI itself can avoid losing a massive number of its employees.

Altman and OpenAI confirmed the news early this morning but we are still kept in the dark on exactly what went wrong here. The board of directors' decision to fire Altman came out of nowhere and shocked everyone, including Microsoft, which is why the company went to such great lengths to swiftly negotiate a deal.

A new board of directors is now in place at OpenAI and former Twitch CEO, Emmet Shear, will no longer be taking over as head of the company.

KitGuru Says: It was a wild few days for OpenAI, which almost tanked its value in a never-before-seen fashion. We may never get the full story behind the board's actions but at this point, it may no longer matter. Altman will return as head of the company, Microsoft is still happy to work with them and the employees who called on the board to reinstate Altman and step down themselves, got their wish.
