Intel unveils new Pro 2500 SSDs for corporate computers

Intel Corp. on Wednesday rolled-out its new SSD Pro 2500-series solid-state drives designed for corporate personal computers. The new drives offer high performance, very strong security, remote manageability and high power efficiency.

The Intel SSD Pro 2500-series drives are based on multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory made using 20nm process technology at IM Flash. The new SSDs will be available in 120GB, 80GB, 240GB, 360GB and 480GB capacities in 2.5” and M.2 (80mm and 60mm) form-factors with the Serial ATA-6Gb/s interface. The SSD Pro 2500-family solid-state drives deliver up to 540MB/s/490MB/s read/write performance, respectively; the storage solutions also provide up to 45K/80K 4KB random reads/writes.

The new SSD Pro 2500 family drives feature a hardware-based 256-bit AES encryption engine which seamlessly and consistently encrypts and decrypts data without sacrificing performance. The SSDs also sport TCG’s Opal version 2.0 policy-based control of the encryption and are Microsoft eDrive capable.

“The need to protect assets, keep an eye on the bottom line and ensure employees have the best tools is a challenge for IT departments,” said Rob Crooke, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of the non-volatile memory solutions group. “The Intel SSD Pro 2500 series is a well-rounded solution to help balance those often competing needs. Adding the Pro 2500 series to the Intel SSD professional family delivers a powerful storage solution to help businesses of all sizes meet their critical IT needs.”

KitGuru Says: The new professional drives from Intel hardly break performance records, even with the M.2 interconnection. It looks like the drives are designed to be very reliable and secure, even at the cost of performance.
