If Amazon wasn't already considered in all out war with the traditional book sale industry, it is now. Extending its Kindle dominance over eBooks even further, Amazon has now launched a subscription service for the platform, offering some half million plus digital books for unlimited viewing, for just $9.99 a month.
The service is called Kindle Unlimited and users will be able to read the freely available eBooks on Kindle devices, as well as any others that support the Kindle app. In total, users will have access to 600,000 eBooks, as well as over 2,000 full length audio books. As the above video shows, some of the world's most popular books like Life of Pi, the Harry Potter series and the Hunger Games saga are all available through the new scheme. Books that have both eBook and audiobook options, will give users the chance to switch between reading and listening with the tap of the screen.
The real question surrounding this however, is how Amazon will deal with any fallout from book publishers over royalties. Presumably it has an arbitrary system set up in the back end to handle it, but it will be interesting to see if anyone kicks off, as Amazon's relationship with publishers has been tenuous at best for years.
KitGuru Says: If I didn't own a competing eBook reader, I'd blatantly take advantage of this.
