Smart Modular begins to sample DDR4 memory modules

Smart Modular Technologies, a leading independent maker of specialty memory and storage solutions, said Thursday that it has begun shipments of DDR4 memory modules in sample quantities. The DDR4 memory modules are designed for servers, micro-servers, workstations, storage and networking applications.

Currently, Smart Modular's lineup of available DDR4-2133 1.2V modules includes VLP (very low profile) and standard height RDIMMs up to 16GB, and ECC SO-DIMMs up to 8GB. The new DDR4 288-pin DIMMs feature all the advantages the DDR4 technology brings, such as improved power efficiency, higher performance, enhanced system reliability and other. Exact specifications of the DDR4 memory solutions from Smart Modular look as follows:

These samples are for qualification in next generation server, storage and networking applications which are expected to launch later in 2014 and in 2015.

Earlier this week unbuffered DDR4 memory modules for high-end desktops from SanMax Technologies emerged on sale in Tokyo, Japan.

KitGuru Says: The fact that an independent memory module maker already obtained DDR4 chips from manufacturers and even developed special-purpose solutions based on them is clearly a good one. However, given that qualification takes time, the company will begin to ship its DDR4 modules in volumes  only in 2015. As a result, this year DDR4 DIMMs for servers and workstations will only be available from major DRAM and module makers.
