CD Projekt Red doesn’t think DirectX 12 will help 1080p on Xbox One

Will DirectX 12 help fix Microsoft's lack of 1080p games on the Xbox One? According to the lead engine programmer behind the Witcher 3, Balazs Torok, the updated API will bring some benefits but resolution increases won't be one of them.

Speaking with Gaming Bolt, Torok explained that while DirectX 12 might allow programmers to squeeze more “triangles” out of the GPU, the shading power just isn't there to make it worth it:

“I think there is a lot of confusion around what and why DX12 will improve. Most games out there can’t go 1080p because the additional load on the shading units would be too much. For all these games DX12 is not going to change anything.”

“They might be able to push more triangles to the GPU but they are not going to be able to shade them, which defeats the purpose. I think we will see a change in the way graphics programmers will think about their pipelines and this will result in much better systems hopefully.”

Torok isn't saying that the Xbox One isn't capable of 1080p gaming, since we already know that more 1080p games will be coming to the console thanks to the June developers kit update. However, he is saying that DirectX 12 won't improve performance in the resolution department.

The Witcher 3 is CD Projekt Red's most ambitious title to date and will likely end up being one of the most graphically intensive games available on PC. With that in mind, would you really expect either the PS4 or Xbox One to run the game at 1080p?

KitGuru Says: The Witcher 3's resolution hasn't been confirmed for the PS4 or Xbox One but I would be surprised if either console manages 1080p given the current track record. The Witcher 2 brought high end PC's to their knees and many are expecting the latest game in the series to do the same thing. Are you guys excited for the Witcher 3?

  1. In other words Final Fantasy XV would be delayed further

  2. I like consoles as I have both the XB1 and PS4 but they came out of the gate stupidly under powered compared to when the 360 and PS3 came out.

Using off the shelf parts for consoles was a huge mistake as we have seen with these consoles, They should of gone the custom hardware route like they did with the 360 and PS3 so devs could make use of all that power for years to come.

As it stands now devs are having to cut corners and cut down on graphical features, Frame rate, Resolution, Details and a plethora of other things which means the end product is a far cry from what the game developer wanted and envisioned as they have too little computational power.

I hope the next round of consoles is better because these ones are abysmal.

Please………. if you game on an XBone do you care about 1080p…
(Surely you would be on PC, like a proper gamer should.)

  4. What are you talking about? they have custom hardware, you can’t buy the ps4 or xbone SoC anywhere. It’s just that they’re less specialised than they used to be: Adopting the x86 architecture is the best thing to happen to consoles as it means all 3 major platforms now share similar architechture and makes porting much easier rather than forcing developers to learn to code for a new one.
They are underpowered, but the solution to that was simply higher spec SoC’s rather than customised hardware. They however chose to keep cost/power consumption down.

  5. If you do a bit of research you would know that the SOC that both the XB1 and PS4 use are called “Off the shelf parts” due to the nature of them being almost identical and being pretty much an AMD 8 core with APU bolted on, Well in basic PC terms anyway I know there’s more to it.

They are custom yes but not in the true sense that the previous consoles we’re, Both consoles had completely different architecture, Different powerful internals, the new ones use pretty much the exact same internals from AMD as each other and came out already badly underpowered.

  6. I am aware of the SoC’s internal in both consoles. As i stated, they’re custom but not as specialised as they were in the previous gen.
All i’m debating here is your claim that custom = better or custom > “off-the-shelf”, which isn’t true.

  7. Dude come off it, there’s no need to make this into a pointless debate, Both consoles are shit lets leave it at that.

I think your missing the point, As he said “Off the shelf” is just a term and 1 widely used in the hardware industry to describe parts that are inside the consoles i.e bog standard slow DDR3 in the XB1and standard GDDR5 in the PS4, A basic hard drive in both consoles and a fairly low end Blu-Ray player in both all of which can be bought through a computer store ergo the saying “Off the shelf parts” the only ok’ish part is the core which in itself sucks festering arse.

  9. the only point i was trying to make is that a fully custom solution (like the one in the 360 and ps3) is not necessarly better than off-the-shelf, not trying to debate what off the shelf means.
Happy to drop the discussion though and leave it at both consoles are crap.

  10. apart from being an 8 core APU they dont really have anything in common with Kaveri The Jaguar that both consoles use is more commonly used in low power draw applications like smartphone/tablets and really budget laptops, but yeah as you said the really slow DDR3/GDDR5 and the painfully slow 5200rpm Hard Drive don’t help.

It does make me laugh that the console fanboys fall for the B.S about MS/sony not making much of a profit given how cheap the parts they use are and the quantity they would have bought them in, their actual “cost price” is like half of what the retail price is since I as a retail customer paying retail prices could build a Kaveri based rigwith a 1TB HD for the same or less money if i did not include a separate GPU just using the Kaveri’s IGP.

  11. I just Want to play the shit out of this game really fast please I personally don’t give TWO fucks about the crazy Graphics I Hope in for the life of Gods who will give me this game at At 1080p 30% Firms Its Witchier 3 would Hunt.
