Activision has everything COD-related planned out right up to the next-gen console launch

Having run the Call of Duty franchise for 20 years, Activision has gotten into a good habit of planning things out years in advance. There could be change on the horizon though, as Activision currently only has COD planned out to 2027. 

Discussing the franchise with GamesBeat, Activision President, Rob Kostich, confirmed that right now, they have all things COD-related planned out through 2027. The years beyond that are still up in the air but chances are more planning will take place soon, as Activision Blizzard is about to change ownership, with a merger with Microsoft set to complete later this month.

Managing a long-running franchise is no easy feat and currently, Activision has over 3000 developers dedicated to making Call of Duty games. Even with Microsoft acquiring Activision, we should expect annual COD releases to continue, after all, it is one of the top-selling games each year and Microsoft is going to need to earn back its $70 billion investment.

With things being planned out so far ahead, it is interesting that we heard rumours of a Modern Warfare 2 expansion arriving this year instead of a full new game. Ultimately, Sledgehammer ended up making Modern Warfare 3, rather than an expansion.

The 2027 date is more interesting as document leaks recently pointed towards 2028 as the year we're most likely to see new Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
