In an unfortunate move which we have seen become more and more common, game publishers have started to include the controversial Denuvo DRM to its games AFTER launch, in order to avoid any negative press during the review period. The latest title to engage in such tactics is Assassin’s Creed Mirage – adding Denuvo via the game’s day-1 patch.
As reported by Timo Schmidt via Mastodon, Ubisoft has added Denuvo’s DRM to Assassin's Creed via a day-one patch. While annoying in its own right, even more egregious is the fact that the DRM was added after the review embargo, meaning critics would not have had the chance to mention this fact in their reviews.
Of course, AC: Mirage isn’t the only game to add DRM post-launch. Most recently, the Souls-like Lies of P did something similar, adding Denuvo via an update ahead of launch but after reviews were already live.
Denuvo is disliked by many for a number of reasons. While its existence can go against the ethos of PC gaming and its open nature, the software has in the past also been responsible for reducing the performance of games which feature the tech – making for an objectively worse experience. Hopefully Ubisoft officially addresses this latest addition sooner rather than later.
