AMD Ryzen 8040 APU listings look very similar to their 7040 series counterparts

Details of AMD's upcoming Zen 4 update for 2024 laptops seem to have been leaked. From what we see, the Ryzen 8040 “Hawk Point” series is the first to use the new AMD Phoenix architecture, suggesting that the 8040H series will feature Zen 4 cores and RDNA 3 graphics.

According to the Geekbench entries shared by Benchleaks (Ryzen 9 8940H, Ryzen 7 8840HS, and Ryzen 5 8640HS), the Ryzen 9 8940H will have eight cores and sixteen threads, with a base frequency of 4.0GHz and a turbo rate of 5.2GHz. That's pretty much the same as the Ryzen 9 7940H(S) APU.

Meanwhile, the Ryzen 7 8840HS will have the same 8-core, 16-thread configuration but with a reduced clock frequency of 3.8/5.1GHz. The Ryzen 5 8640HS is expected to have six cores and twelve threads, a base frequency of 4.3GHz, and a boost speed of 5.0GHz. These specs are also similar to the Ryzen 7640HS.

Regarding performance, the 8940H scored 2,467 points in the Geekbench V6 single-core test and 13,104 points in the multicore test. The 8840HS was found to be 7% slower in single-core testing (2,286 points) and 12% slower in multicore tests (11,550 points), while the 8640HS had comparable single-core performance to the 8840HS (2,276 points) but was around 9% slower in multicore tests (10,469 points).

The listings show that all of these CPUs will have integrated Radeon 780M and 760M graphics, indicating that AMD has not made any significant changes to the graphics section. However, it remains to be seen whether the graphics frequency will be adjusted, as this information was not included in the benchmark listings. The new Ryzen 8040H series is expected to launch early next year.
