Witcher 3 dev responds to no 1080p on Xbox One or PS4 claims

The developer behind The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, CD Projekt Red, has responded to reports suggesting that the game won't hit the 1080p mark on either the Xbox One or the Playstation 4. Tomasz Tinc, the company's Marketing Manager has explained that there is still a good six months to go before release and that the guys behind the game's engine are still in the process of optimising.

Speaking with Gamespot, Tinc said: “We are working hard on optimizing the game and nothing is set in stone. Our engine team remains optimistic and we will surely squeeze the most we can out of each console. I know you might be expecting concrete info like the final frame rate and resolution, but it's simply impossible to give you that sort of thing before the optimization process is complete.”

Optimisation is usually one of the last things developers get around to doing when creating a game, so it makes sense that the company can't reveal the title's final frame-rate or resolution just yet. However, given the PS4 and Xbox One's current track record- I would be surprised if either machine managed 1080p. Especially when you consider how demanding The Witcher 2 was on modern day PC's.

We don't know the recommended specifications for the game on the PC either, it's possible that today's high end rigs will struggle. Only time will tell.

KitGuru Says: I think the best thing Sony, Microsoft and console developers can do right now is to simply stop talking about resolution. Gamers that truly care about getting a ‘superior experience' should just invest in a decent PC instead- you don't buy a console for sharper textures or higher resolutions, you buy them for the simplicity.
What do you guys think? Should console developers stop announcing resolutions all of the time?

  1. Yup, honda’s should stop comparing themselves to bugatti’s and just focus on their strengths.

  2. The Witcher 2, was probably one of the few games that actually pushed the my pc to near its limit. I remember seeing around 2.3/2.5GB of graphic memory being used on my pc

The next game will again push the limits of pc industry almost for sure. As for the console players (and I do own the PS3 and PS4), even the current consoles dont have the crunching power for running The Witcher 2 at 1080p@60fps, much alone the upcoming one.

  3. Yep, they should focus on their strengths like, as you say, the ease of the experience.

  4. Yup, and all of this was DX9. It’s great how they managed to make the game look as good as other games at that time. More ubersampling yo.

  5. Silly console owners bitching that their mid-range pc clones can’t muscle a truly taxing game

  6. Søren Chr. Nielsen

And then just imagine what they’d have been able to do if they didn’t have to deal with the shitness that is DX9. It’s really impressive what they managed to get out of it.

  7. A solid (as in “never goes below”) 30fps experience on console will be enough for that kind of third person game (the more the better but it’s already good enough compared to FPS/Race game which really need 60fps)
If they can achieve such result, most console owners won’t care about the resolution (only the “excentric minority” over the internet)

  8. If the game may even struggle with high end PC’s, you have to wonder who the devs are targeting as their audience on day one. It’s no good making a game that no-one can fully enjoy until more powerful hardware comes along in 2 years time. Why not just release it in 2 years time. Or better still, downsize your ambitions and make a great game that runs well on the current hardware that consumers actually own. But that’s too logical, so they just continue pushing the boat out too far thinking they can wow us with the uber trailers instead of focussing on the actual game.
