LG Electronics on Monday said that it would unveil the world’s first curved ultra-wide computer display with 21:9 aspect ratio next month at IFA 2014 trade-show in Berlin, Germany. The display is designed for both professionals as well as home entertainment enthusiasts.
LG’s Curved UltraWide Monitor (model 34UC97) features 34” IPS panel with 3440*1440 resolution, hence, it is not suitable for ultra-high-definition movies. Nonetheless, it should be a good solution for full-HD content, photographs, video games as well as multimedia programs that require a lot of extra screen real estate.
The 34UC97 display is compatible with Apple Mac and PCs, it also supports Thunderbolt 2 interconnection in addition to other connectivity options. The monitor features Maxx Audio and 7W stereo speaker system.
Pricing of the 34” curved monitor is unknown, but don’t expect it to be really affordable: this is the world’s first model of a curved display with 21:9 aspect ratio that is positioned for both professionals and power-users.
“Many people spend more time in front of computer monitors than they do in front of TV sets and yet the industry’s biggest monitor manufacturers don’t seem to innovate at the same pace as TV manufacturers,” said Hyoung-sei Park, head of the IT business division at LG Electronics’ home entertainment company. “At LG, innovation in display technologies isn’t just limited to our market-leading TV products but are actively being implemented in our advanced PC monitors. And that’s why we’re particularly proud to be introducing at IFA the world’s first 21:9 Curved UltraWide monitor with a curved IPS display which delivers a wide 178-degree viewing angle for an immersive viewing experience.”

KitGuru Says: Curved TVs have not gained a lot of popularity since their advantages are not obvious. It will be interesting to see whether LG’s ultra-wide curved display will actually manage to become more or less popular among gamers and video fans. It is hard to imagine that it is actually convenient to work on a curved display, hence, the majority of buyers of the LG 32UC97 will be consumers, not prosumers or professionals.
