Sony: We do not know why PlayStation 4 is successful

Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 is one of the fastest-selling consoles in the history of video game hardware in general, a great success for the platform-holder. What is interesting is that even Sony itself does not fully understand the reasons behind such massive success. Still, a good news now is that Sony can fulfill demand for the console across the world.

“The 10 million sell through in the first nine months is well beyond what we had hoped for,” said Shuhei Yoshida, the president of Worldwide Studios at Sony Computer Entertainment, in an interview with Eurogamer. “As you know, we have struggled to keep up with demand of PS4 for so many months. It was hard to find and purchase PS4. Now we are able to supply units so in every territory I believe you can find PS4. So we just managed to catch up with demand.”

What is a bit alarming is that Sony does not fully understand the reasons behind PS4’s massive success. It is obvious that the console is available on many markets, it is obvious that at present core gamers prefer it to competing Xbox One from Microsoft, but Sony, at least officially, does not know how to replicate this success going forward.

“I for one am a bit nervous because we do not completely understand what's happening,” said Mr. Yoshida. “You need to understand why your products are selling well so you can plan for the future, right? It defied the conventional thinking. Lots of people thought the dedicated game hardware might not be needed going forward, but still lots of people are very excited.”

Apparently, the PlayStation 4 platform attracted a lot of gamers who did not own any previous-generation consoles. Therefore, in addition to core gamers, there are a lot of new console gamers as well among the owners of PS4. Keeping in mind rather dull prospects predicted by analysts for the new-generation consoles, it is completely unclear how many gamers could potentially buy PS4 hardware.

“As soon as we see a great sales number, our instinct tells us we should be concerned about future sales, right,” said Mr. Yoshida. “Are we exhausting all the core gamers? If we sell this number of units, there are no more consumers we can sell to. That's a really terrifying prospect. So we want to understand who are these consumers who we do not necessarily consider core gamers, who are purchasing PS4 and why they are doing it and what they are doing with PS4, so we can create a bit more of a positive future, rather than saying, wow, we have sold to every single core gamer.”

KitGuru Says: It is rather interesting that Sony does not really understand who buy PlayStation 4 consoles and why at the moment. But will this be a threat for the platform in general? Maybe, if there are too many casual gamers among the current buyers. In fact, it just looks like PlayStation 4 got popular among core console gamers and core PC gamers, which are very similar audiences from many standpoints.

  1. I don’t yet own a PS4 but want one easily over the Xbox One, the lack of games has meant be stalling over getting one so far. I’ve owned both the Xbox 360 and PS3 – the later of which I still own – the PS3 to me was always the better gaming console and I’d imagine this is also what gamers see in the potential of the PS4, especially compared to the Xbox One.

What you now need to do Sony is get some good exclusive games under the belt of the PS4 to carry on it’s success, many of my friends are turning to the PS4 from the Xbox One.

Killzone is better than Halo, Gran Turismo is better than Forza, Planetside is just awesome…keep em’ coming!

  2. There are 100 million previous generation games and 10 million PS4 owners. The console has not been out a year yet, this Christmas, if the price is right, they will sell well enough. The uptake will happen as gamers replace previous hardware with the new.

I have little interest in the previous generation. I got a PS3 in January this year, and then a PS4 last month. I don’t know why, but it seemed like a great console, hardware wise, and it really is.

  3. i own both, not gettin gthis ‘war’ at all its a pile of shite, they are both good-micrrosoft just messed up the initial marketing

  4. um… isn’t it just because they have give us a hellova lot better impression on everyone compared to Microsoft, and that the PS4 have pretty much no flaws compared to the Xbone’s bad history of (forgive my word choices) shittyness and retarded business moves that makes no sense for gamers in general? Xbone still wins the controller design though. :/

  5. 2 words, price perfomance

  6. Sony seems to be too baffled by the amazing sales of the PS4…

Sony doesnt understand the reasons???…I do
    1) Microsoft fucked up the Xbox One

    2) PS4 looks wayy more badass than the ‘BOX’ microsoft wasted its time on

3)Amazing exclusives, especially from the likes of Naughty Dog with The last of us (most award winning game in history), people have bought the playstation just so they could play this game

    4) Kinect sucks when compared to the move, i’d rather hold something that resembles a light saber in my hands than wait for 12 million years for the kinect sensors to catch up with my movements, sure! kinect knows your heart rate bpm, great now i can full fill the dreams of my life and become a doctor

    5) Microsoft: ‘TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!….we fucked it up…’ those of you who saw E3 will know what i’m on about

6)TOUCHPAD!!!!!!! (Light on the back of the controller also contributes)

    7) Halo, something that increased Xbox 360 sales is not there anymore to hold the Xbox one’s hand

    8) Where’s your exclusives Xbox??? oh right i get it you buried it under COD Ghosts (again E3 reference), and thought that maybe shoving money in the mouths of the Devs of Tomb Raider 2013 will improve xbox sales, sadly, it probably will. Damn those guys had made such a good IP and probably an amazing series but you had to screw it up for everyone- (those of you who dont know, Tomb Raider 2013’s sequel will be xbox exclusive)
…i think that pretty much sums it up, its odd how the xbox failing, Windows 8 selling miserably and windows phones getting beasted is all happening at the same time

  7. Last gen came out like 7 years ago. That could be part of it. If NVIDIA waited 7 years to release a new graphics card, people would go crazy. LOL

  9. Irishgamer Gamer

    Yip
1] Microsoft factor. Press conference. What a f**k up. Locking down everything. Basically trying to screw as much money from its victims, sorry customers, that it could. Doing stuff like adverts on dashboards etc.
    2] Price. 100 euro/dollars is a lot of money.
    3] Hardware power

    Fix it?
Cut price say 299. Perhaps with the 1TB Drive as standard. Plus bundle a game.
Keep it under wraps. Do a last minute big bang event. They will sell shed loads.

(Or just PC game, like I do, and avoid all this stupid crap)

  10. Well i for one owna PS4 and ill get an XB1 in the future, but Leonell your comments are very childish,

    1. They made mistakes but power isnt everything.

    2. they both look like boxes made from plastic

    3. Xbox has exclusives, Sunset Overdrive looks awesome.

    4. Kinect doesn’t suck, it just should never of been forced.

    5. Isn’t this point 1 again?

    6. Name one PS4 game that requires touchpad to improve? infact id say the XB1 Controller is superior. and the light on the back is somewhat an issue with not being able to switch it off.

    7. Agree Halo isn’t what it used to be.

    8. You already mentioned exclusives on point 3, and Tomb Raider is a timed exclusive, it will come to PS4 and PC. what does Windows or WP8 have to do with xbox?

seriously grow up, competition is healthy and benefits the consumer. both consoles have pros and cons, where is PS4 MP3 or MKV support, its all well and good talking exclusives id rather talk good gameplay.

  11. Yeah. Word of mouth. That’s it really.. Just lots of confusion. All it takes is a general view of “this is shit” and it just spreads.. Vista.. 8… Xbox One. You get the drift.
