Windows 9 could be revealed September 30th

New reports are suggesting that we could see Windows 9 revealed at the end of September, the OS is supposedly codenamed ‘Threshold' and will hopefully have a smoother launch than Windows 8, which many PC users still refuse to upgrade to, despite the improvements it brings.

This news came from The Verge, citing sources familiar with Microsoft's plans. Coincidentally, this lines up well with other rumours we've heard over the last few weeks. For example, ZDnet recently reported that Microsoft will be releasing a Windows 9 preview at the end of next month, a rumour that now looks much more likely. The preview should give us an early look at the return of the start menu, which is said to feature live tiles in addition to traditional icons.

Aside from the return of the start menu, we may see the ‘Charms bar' go away in Windows 9. Current builds of Threshold contain an early version of Cortana, the Windows Phone assistant- it is possible that Microsoft might be thinking about bringing the feature to desktops, much like Apple is rumoured to be doing with Siri at the moment.

At the press event on the 30th of September, Microsoft will go over the Operating System's new key features, it might also talk more about upcoming changes to Windows RT and Windows Phone.

KitGuru Says: It looks like Windows 9 might be just around the corner. If Microsoft improves its UI and focusses more on the desktop experience, will you upgrade? Which version of Windows are you running at the moment?

  1. change the way windows 9 menu to windows 7 as it was more organised square boxes icons is for touch screens dont make w9 anything like w8

  2. They need to improve mutltiple monitor setups, hate having to use a program like actual multiple monitors to get the features I want

  3. really are lacking in ideas aren’t they? Still the same static task bar, no grouping of programs, no additional taskbars based on program grouping. No sensible ordering in the way programs are displayed in the taskbar and desktop. No mutiple desktop layouts which are customisable for say.. work or gaming. Who the fuck wants to go back to default programs, desktop gadget gallery, windows anyrtime upgrade and all that bollocks in your face first after youve already had to click all programs? bloody android devices have better options than a windows desktop. I love gaming and my pc very much, but the lack of innovation at microsoft really pisses me off. After the update to 8.1 and changing the settings to all programs the full screen taskbar isnt to bad but then you want to add a desktop icon and fucks sake you cant!! want to go from desktop browsing to metro layout of explorer, oh you fucking cant! a half built 8.1 which their bypassing and making win 9 with fuck all innovation just the old program bar with metro bits tagged on. Is this really acceptable? is it fuck.

  4. I have to agree. I would love to give Linux an actual run, but game support really is holding me from leaving the Windows platform. But it isn’t just that, on a daily basis I’d rather use GUIs than terminal for installing with terminal as an optional extra. While I can easily follow tuts, it’s always quicker to click “next, next, done”.

  5. If they bring back the start menu then they have made a mistake they took the risk and I think the metro screen works.

Also there better be a promo on when it comes out because they can’t expect users to pay full whack two years after Windows 8

If it gives you the option of reverting to the start menu or keeping the new BETTER ui then I am ask for it

  6. “despite the improvements it brings.”

Death brings improvements, like not having to speak to people, but I wouldn’t say that’s a reason to die.

  7. The majority of people, and most importantly pretty much every business customer ever, hates using 8 for those reasons, so it’s definitely a good idea.

  8. I’m really happy to see the is this close to release already. I’ll more than probably upgrade 2-3 months after release, and have it till… Well…. Till my pc becomes a total stone age. Which is not THAT far, but long away 🙂
I, my parents, my sys, and one of my grandmas still use Win7, and they will likely never upgrade. Oh well 🙂

  9. then go to linux bitch

  10. Use Ubuntu, its software center simplifies the process a lot. I would suggest trying it out on a virtual machine first.

  11. Cortana, is a MUST if Microsoft don’t include, then its back to the dark days of “THE INTERNET WILL NEVER TAKE OFF” MS stupidity, also include a good download manager, geez windows still cant RESUME a download? i think MS needs to get back to basics on what is lacking, time to take off the rose colored glasses,,,

  12. Honestly, most programs do have gui counterparts now. Many people use Linux without needing to go to command line, it’s just old hardcores and power users typically favor the term

  13. Troll’s butt hurt.

  14. Roll on Windows 10. Linux is looking more appealing with every update.

  15. Even Debian has a GUI installer.

  16. Linux is looking more appealing with every update. MS has lost the plot.

  17. Fuck innovation. To you newer users, innovation is code for “all kinds of retarded shit all over the place that does nothing but slow things down.”

They need to simplify. Get rid of the aero-type bullshit, widgets or gadgets or w/e the fuck, get rid of that Metro trash, etc. Lightweight OS please.
