While it was expected that Nvidia Corp. plans to launch two high-end graphics cards this October, the company apparently intends to release three new products aiming different market segments that month. The launch of three new products will help Nvidia to maximize its sales later this year.
Hermitage Akihabara web-site reports that Nvidia plans to introduce high-end GeForce GTX 870 and GeForce GTX 880 graphics cards based on the GM204 graphics processor in early October. In late October the company intends to release GeForce GTX 860 graphics adapter aiming mid-range market segment. It is likely that the solution will also be based on the GM204 graphics processing unit.
Keeping in mind that the GeForce GTX 860 will unlikely cost substantially more than $300/£200, it is logical to assume that the GM204 chip is not too expensive to manufacture.
What is unclear is what performance levels will be offered by the new GPUs. Theoretically, the GeForce GTX 880 should be faster than the GeForce GTX 780, however, that graphics card is based on the GK110 GPU, which is the world’s most complex graphics processor ever designed and which is probably more expensive to make than the GM204.
Nvidia’s GM204 graphics processing unit is based on the second-generation Maxwell architecture and is made using 28nm process technology.
Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

You do realize AMD has an R9 295X coming out soon that is more than likely going to be faster than a 780ti and also more than likely a LOT cheaper than one.
I own a pair of GTX 560Ti 448 Core Classifieds and always said to myself that I’d probably upgrade when the n900 series comes out but judging by nVidias decision to release later in the year instead of earlier in the year like in the past I may have to get a n800 series card. I’ve always preferred second gen cards of new architecture, such as the n500, n700 etc but I can’t foresee waiting until early 2016 atleast for the n900 series to show up

No, you’re thinking of the R9 295X2. The R9 295X will have 3072 stream processors compared to the 2,816 of the 290X.

Yeah, it only took them around 3 weeks to release the gtx780ti after amd released the r9 290x “titan killer”.
The 290x was indeed a titan killer. Nobody cares about 1080p when talking about high end cards, and above 1080p, at 2k, 4k and triple monitor, even the 290 (non X) was faster than both 780 and titan… 780ti? who would pay extra $250 to get 5% better performance??? it’s like people paying $3000 to buy a card that is a 5% faster than a $1500 card.
Well, there is more to graphics cards than price to performance ratio. It like buying a crappy modified car and saying it’s better than a Ferrari because it costs less and goes faster.
Besides, who is buying 4k monitors? Not very many.
Nvidia cards are known for higher build quality. That metal reference design shroud on the gtx 780ti feels and looks (most would agree) better than the R9 290X reference shroud.
Also, Nvidia gpu’s generally have better power efficiency, which in turn produces less heat, which means the clock frequencies can be higher more often, and also giving higher overclocking headroom.
Looking at the software side of things, Nvidia has more frequent drivers being released for support for the newest games.
AMD is great for people tight on a budget , or building their first pc, but enthusiasts generally go for Nvidia.
And then there is g-sync, which is proven to be a success, which unfortunately requires a nvidia gpu.
And yeah, that titan z is rather ridiculous in price.
The thing I find is, you can normally Crossfire AMDs cards for the price of 1 Nvidia card these days. Which to be honest is why I go for them. Yeah, maybe the support isn’t as good in some games, but in other (BF4 for example) AMD crush them.

You do realize that AMD have dynamic v-sync coming soon, right. Ask Your trusty GOOGLE for more. Build quality of the card itself has little to non to do with AMD and nVidia. How many of You have a card build by them, rather than Asus or Gigabyte etc. One thing I find a plus for nVidia is the exclusive EVGA manufacturer, whose cards are very well made with cherry-picked GPUs.
I own the exact same board , and im more than happy with it so far , i run all games on high/ultra , but they introduced some shitty things like the multisampling , supersampling , v-synk starting to be a must… and Texture res at ultra is impossible as i have only 1gb vram…
We all buy graphic cards for purpose.. When there is a purpose we look for the best card with every aspect.. So waiting for some other godly card in future is not worth mentioning.. 😀

I don’t know man. I have used both AMD and Nvidia during the years, and I can tell you quality has nothing to do in here. I agree that Nvidia has better power efficiency but not much besides that.
About the higher clock frequencies, it does not matter. It’s just like the FX cpus that reach 5GHz and can’t beat a 3.4GHz i5. On gpus, clock per clock amd has been the king for a couple of series now that’s why Nvidia needs their cards to reach 1.1-1.2GHz in order to compete with AMD counter part. But that is not an issue. The issue here is people having the misconception of AMD being for a “tight budget” with $400-$500 cards just becuase those cards are 5% slower than a $700 overpriced card. No wonder Nvidia has prices like shit now, seeing the zombie fanboys will buy anything at any price.
By the way, anyone wanting the looks and prestige of a brand would certainly go with a Ferrari or Lamborghini, and that’s it. But when talking about performance, please do not make senseless comparisons. GTR Godzilla says hello for half the price.

Only took them about 10 years, I went back to AMD when they released the R9 290, bought the asus directcu, had 90° temps and horrible coil whine, I RMA’d it and they sent me a GTX 780 because they were having those issues across the board, lesson learned I’ll pay the extra money for a quality product next time. Not being a fanboy just going off of first hand experience.

yeah i built a decent enthusiast rig, msi gaming 9 ac, i7 4790k, 2x msi gaming gtx780 SLI+ msi gaming gtx750ti for physx. 16gb DDr3 kingston hyperx beast 2400mhz, evga supernova g2 1300 watts. samsung 250gb ssd, seagate 2tb Hybrid SSHD. Cased in an Antec P193. And using a samsung 4K monitor. I would have never thought of putting any AMD bits in there. Why go cheap, Go BIG or go HOME.
That’s ASUS’s fault, not AMD’s and certainly does not speak for the other designs such as the Tri-x.

What about the debacle with the stock AMD coolers at launch, the press samples running faster, high temperatures and fan noise, whos fault was that. The first AMD card I owned was an x700 and I’ve had a problem with every one since. I have not had a single problem with any nvidia card. I’m sure they have some nice ones but I’ll stick to what I know works.

I’m probably going to get a couple 8 GB GTX 880’s if such a thing comes out. I’ll also get a Core i7 5820K six core. This is at the end of the year, when all of that stuff comes out.

Right…everything given to you is kickass…like MS Academic Alliance/DreamSpark where they give away Windows and Office for free to faculty, students in CS or CIS OR cheap to other students. It’s just a ploy to get credibility and promote their products because, well, people love free or cheap stuff even if it may be garbage. Once you have people “hooked” on a product and people get acclimated to the product, then there is resistance when there is an actual product that is better in many ways (or in all ways) that is trying to make it into the market.
I am NOT saying EVGA is garbage (because they are not); however, doing your own research/study and reading quality reports, performance charts, etc. can make for an informed response.

Like Trey said, definitely ASUS’s fault on their entire R9 lineup. ASUS for some reason strapped the AMD cards with Nvidia designed coolers, so no shit they perform badly. Same goes with MSI. Fuckin lazy companies rush a cooler designed for a different card.

What about the reference card? Did you expect them to run cool like a third party cooler? Any blower type design is loud at high temperatures. I don’t see how it’s a “fault” when it was made by design to run hot and loud to the asset of performance. It least AMD said that the cards could run at high temperatures. Look at Nvidia’s GPU Boost 2.0, like any of the settings actually matter to the program. For proof, look at Linus’s Nvidia card reviews.

I never said I expected a reference cooler to be as good as an aftermarket one. The problem was that AMD had the fan curve set too low at launch so the heat was throttling their cards giving lower than advertised and inconsistent frame rates, which didnt sit well with alot of consumers even after the fix. As for GPU boost 2.0, mine boosts 10 – 20% over advertised clock speeds and linus uses an nvidia card in his personal rig.
I’ve alternated both brands many times since the late 90’s, and it just depends on the year. Some years, one manufacturer is better than the other – its called competition. Overall, my reviews based on EXPERIENCE not FEELINGS(like most people), Nvidia’s drivers are slightly better, AMD’s price to performance is better, Nvidia is more efficient speaking in terms of power consumption, and NEITHER is perfect. Its the fanboyism that slows progress, giving the companies less incentive to compete.
AMDbag and Nvidiot fan boys like yourself are not part of the “smart consumer” category. Unlike you, I’ve alternated brands (both CPU & GPU) for almost 20 years because I buy using logic instead of feelings. There are some years one brand is better than the others, so buy that to fuel competition and speed up progress. People like you only hinder it when you become glued to one brand.

I know, it’s what I’m saying. I can’t understand fanboys paying extra 50%-60% just to get 5% more fps. And their reasoning is “Nvidia = quality”. It’s the sad reality of humankind getting their brains eaten believing anything and repeating it like parrots.
Just like you say, neither company is perfect, both companies have strong and weak points. That’s why people should had never payed $700-$1000 for a single gpu that performed just 2%-5% better than a $400-$500. Those brainless fanboys are slowing development.

Acording to the latest news Nvidia have delayed the GTX 800 series till Q4 2015, which sucks after splashing out on a new rig to be built around a 780 TI, after reading this post i decided to wait till oct for the 800 series and go straight in the top end, now i have to wait till 2015? Do i suck it up and get a 780 or wait… that is the question.

AMD’s are budget cards (same as their processors) they are ok if your on a tight budget but nowhere near the quality or performance of nvidia. with the nvidia you get WAY better drivers, more stable frame rates, less noise, less heat, less power consumption (which costs you money) the R9 seriies is quite frankly pathetic it reminds me of when voodoo was putting 4 chips on a card because they couldn’t compete.
