Pirates had Expendables 3 for a week before leak

The next old-action-star pay-cheque-generator, Expendables 3, isn't set for release until 15th August in America, with the première here in the UK on the 4th. However many people have seen it already, as the film was leaked in its entirety at DVD quality on torrent sites just a few days ago. The pirates responsible, actually had access to it since mid July though, they were just worried about releasing it so early as chances are the studios would be hopping mad and could potentially throw a lot of resources at trying to find out what happened.

“We know that the leak was back then, around July 15, but everyone was scared to leak it. Most private groups had it for more than 10 days, but again they were scared to leak it,” TorrentFreak's source said. Ultimately it was late on the 24th July that the film finally hit The Pirate Bay.

This is the last thing a movie studio wants to see pre-release

TF did some digging to confirm the claims that the movie was kicking around for a lot longer than that and ultimately turfed up a post from 4Chan which claimed on the 15th, to have a DVD of an upcoming movie. The poster claimed to be looking for a piracy group who could leak the film for them.

He later reposted saying a group had gotten in touch with him and that they were now checking his proof that he had such a copy. That was his last post, so whether he's now keeping quiet to protect his identity or was already found out, remains to be seen.

KitGuru Says: It's amazing that the guys that get into positions of receiving pre-release movies like this choose to leak it. I think I'd be selfish and keep all of the preview-goodness to myself. What about you guys?

It’s a douchebag thing to do, leaking this movie before its release. Yes, it’s all explosions and big action shots of old-school stars together with some new blood in a genre that may offend some people’s sensibilities, but … WTF? This will kill the production company, especially outside the US (where it will be pirated the most and where revenues will disappear).

I, for one, hope to catch it on a big “fuck you” IMAX screen during the silly season.

  2. DVDScr don’t count. I mean it is just stupid to go and see a movie that you want to see in the worst possible audio and video quality. Especially a movie like Expendables with high speed scenes. Have a look also at the file sizes. Most are between 1 and 2GB. Even if it was a Bluray rip it would have been mediocre quality at best.

People who download this kind of quality instead of going to the cinema they are just punishing themselves.

  3. No one is killing anything. If the movie is good, people will go with friends to see the movie in cinema even if a pirated copy of acceptable quality is available on torrents.

  4. what kills movies is the £20 ticket charge, when if they even charged £2 from everyone they would still make a profit

  5. 20£? Really? Crazy price.

  6. Well, then the movie studio should hold on to it better and not put the movie on different release dates, its only natural that we will win that way….

  7. no, that would be a terrible idea! The theatre would start to stink and people getting slightly drunk xD But they should serve something or at least give free popcorn/drink/candy/other.

  8. Quality wasn’t too bad, but I did watch it on my tablet in the office.

I don’t think this article is helping the studio though, its just promoting the fact that its out there!

Im not touching it, i heard there was a massive law suit under way. They are trying to find the person who leaked it and will be trying to track downloads. Dunno how true this is but knowing my luck id get a knock on the door!

  10. Size isn’t indicative of quality. There’s someone named YIFY who makes 1080p rips for 1-1.5 GB and they’re excellent. He has 720p rips that are 700-800 MB.

  11. They actually make very little profit from selling tickets. The killing is made through the food/candy/drinks areas, where the profit margins are huge.
