Ubisoft denies that Assassin’s Creed Unity was downgraded

Ubisoft has denied claims that Assassin's Creed: Unity was intentionally downgraded in order to achieve visual and performance parity between the Xbox One and Playstation 4. Earlier this week it was announced that the game would run at 900p and 30 frames per second on both new consoles, despite the PS4 supposedly being capable of more, in an effort to “avoid debates”.

Now writing on Ubisoft's official blog, AC:Unity Producer, Vincent Pontbriand, addressed earlier statements and claims that he had been misrepresented:

“We've spent four years building the best game we could imagine,” Pontbriand said. “Why would we ever do anything to hold it back? I simply chose the wrong words when talking about the game's resolution, and for that I'm sorry.”

AC Unity

“Let’s be clear up front: Ubisoft does not constrain its games. We would not limit a game’s resolution. And we would never do anything to intentionally diminish anything we’ve produced or developed.”

Ubisoft has been the center of a lot of controversy this year after it was discovered that Watch Dogs had graphical effects intentionally removed from the PC version of the game. Later on the company claimed that Far Cry 4 on the PS4 and Xbox One would be the same as the PC version's ultra preset. However, more recently, some Assassin's Creed developers claimed that the industry should drop the 60 frames per second entirely and aim for 30 to provide a more ‘cinematic' experience. There has even been rumors that the PC version of The Division is already being actively downgraded for console parity reasons. It's safe to say that this hasn't been a good year for Ubisoft PR-wise.

KitGuru Says: This all just feels like damage control on Ubisoft's part. The publisher just seems to be on a huge downward spiral this year. Has your opinion of Ubisoft changed over the last few months?

  1. “We’ve spent four years building the best game we could imagine” – then you lack imagination
“Why would we ever do anything to hold it back?” – because you get money from microsoft to do so
“Let’s be clear up front: Ubisoft does not constrain its games” – yes it does
“We would not limit a game’s resolution” – yes you would
“And we would never do anything to intentionally diminish anything we’ve produced or developed” – should I even try to remind you what you did with Watch_dogs or you are going to find out yourself and delete this stupid post, Ubisoft?

  2. Lying more just makes a lie bigger.

  4. Yves Guillemot: “If we make the game crap, that will deter the 95% of gamers who pirate our products”.

  5. if this is PR damage control, Ubisoft needs to hire a better PR firm. “Bald face lying” is not a valid damage control tactic. Subtle twisting of the facts, yes. Outright saying “I’m not missing my right hand” while the stump gushes all over the other person? That’s what Ubisoft is doing.

  6. Noting but console ports wouldn’t you say, now we have Dead Rising 3, Shadows of Mordor and now The Evil Within plus titles from Uibsoft whats next, so much for the big year of PC Gaming right.

  7. Well they did it on the PC. Watchdogs. (Thanks Microsoft)
Now done it to the PS4. (Wonder who is behind that? Clue starts with M)

  8. Keep saying dive yourselves a grave then when the game launches and. The modding communitt finds your hidden graphic settings and turns them back on. Amazing how when Watch Dogs where turned back on the game became playable for a lot more people. What will the excuse be this time especially when turned back on the game actually does not stutter from. Your poor thing you call optimization ubifail. This is a PC not a console there is no unified memory it is called VRAM, and RAM. That may be a challenge for you to grasp now since it seems back in the day the team that worked there. Actually made decent PC games, Silent Hunter 1-3 are evident of that. After it you went down hill congrats for failing the PC for roughly eleven years now. You wonder why most of the PC community is mad look at your past work. AC4, uplay (u dont play) fails when a new game is released. Watch Dogs, is your doing and startung this the rage has been for years building at you and finally you set it off. If you ever want to fix this then do something right for a change on PC actually optimize the game dont downgrade and turn off graphic settings. Yea the consoles will get mad but to bad that is what you get why should the PC be restricted because of the under powered outdated. Hardware the consoles contain especially since most of us PC gamers spend thousands to build the gaming machine. You brought this on yourself and you choose to continue doing this to the PC. What do you think would happen as far as I am concerned in my book I would rather buy an EA game for full price then one of yours since EA. Admitted there faults to the PC unlike you who will try to hide them and then make it like it is no big deal.
