DayZ launched on Steam's early access program last year and since then, millions of excited fans have bought the game, dismissing the fact that it is far from being finished. As a result, users are starting to complain that these early access builds are still missing many features.
Now DayZ Producer, Hicks, has taken to the official forums to address concerns by reminding people that the game is still in its early stages:
“You are not playing DayZ, you are playing development builds. Early development builds. DayZ is 11 months into principle development, on what should be a 3 year standard development cycle.”
“Defining or judging what DayZ is by a build so early in its development is much a kin to judging a painting within the first few brush strokes. can promise you none of your favorite AAA games played, or even resembled the final product that early in their cycles.”
Hicks then urged players who were losing faith to “take a break” and come back when the game is in beta, which should happen by the end of this year.
These quotes were taken from an extensive forum thread, filled with users complaining about the state of the game. However, it is like the producer said, the game is in early access and still in the very early stages of development.
Eager players can't take all of the blame though, the development team did very little to discourage eager players of the DayZ mod from buying the game in such an early state and instead sat by and watched as millions of people poured money in to a project that wasn't close to being finished.

KitGuru Says: People had high hopes for DayZ and were likely expecting development to be much further along than it was when the game launched on Steam early access due to the amount of time that had passed since the standalone version of the game was announced. Did any of you guys buy DayZ on Steam? Do you think releasing the game on early access was a bad idea?
To be fair, this is the DayZ steam page early access disclaimer:
“DayZ Early Access is your chance to experience DayZ as it evolves throughout its development process. Be aware that our Early Access offer is a representation of our core pillars, and the framework we have created around them. It is a work in progress and therefore contains a variety of bugs. We strongly advise you not to buy and play the game at this stage unless you clearly understand what Early Access means and are interested in participating in the ongoing development cycle.”
Which is the first thing – other than the screenshots – that greets you upon viewing the DayZ store page.
Granted, all early access titles suffer the same “nagging” symptoms, which is one of the reasons why in some cases, early access may indeed be wrong. But right or wrong aside, early access titles should definitely be released as such further down their development cycle, as the market is quick to jump onto – and get bored of- ever newer early access titles, under the wrong impression that it should be a perfectly functional piece of software, albeit missing some features.
Yes, in some way it is a bad decision to release it this early. They did warn the buyers that they should only buy the game to support its developement. However…The game has such slow progression that it feels and looks like they are reeling in the money and let down the fans. The only improvement i personally have seen is that zombies can’t go through doors since a couple of weeks ago while i have bought the game in august 2014. The game is somewhat fun though. I have laughed and annoyed with other players and the game has a good potential to even get the casual gamer to play. But it needs better marketing and faster developement. if they only would develop and listen to the players like the creators of space engineers.
buy the game to support the dev’s, so they can spend more time jacking off and not doing anything major to the game? Like seriously… the game has barely gotten anywhere since it’s gone standalone in Dec 2013.
wow we got a few more guns, couple different hats, some new towns and adjusted spawn locations.
The game engine sucks, the game doesn’t even run great on EXTREME PC’s, the controls and movement are clunky, but yet they still insist on spending countless hours making your character get “Cold temperature”, allowing players to pitch tents and dance around with stupid zombies….
And I swear this has to be only zombie apocalypse game with the least amount of zombies… and since when did zombies sprint around everywhere? and walk through walls, or attack you under a concrete house slab???
maybe the dev’s should look at – the state of decay or watch that tv show – the walking dead to get some better ideas.
First of all, how do you know it doesn’t run well on extreme PCs? Many Youtubers play the game and had no problem with it when it came to performance. I have a 5 years old PC, and it was not a problem to play it either.
Then, why should zombies not sprint around everywhere? Have you seen a zombie in real life? No? Then don’t try to make things sound wrong. But the other stuff you said are true, besides the walking dead part. That show sucks…
Well the game need other game engine, why to use military game engine for zombies and survival game?
They have a lot of money to do that, if want to create a AAA game, otherwise they fail to make a nice game.
Military game engine? I don’t know of any military that uses enfusion engine for their training simulations. If you’re referring to VBS/VBS2 they use the real virtuality engines. Also to note VBS is based off ArmA, not the other way around.
It is designed for a military simualtion, don’t try to be such a smart ass.
I have the game, and for me is a military game engine.
I have a gtx 770 OC 3X and i still dont run on constant 60fps this game is bad optimized it had years to go through development.
No, it’s an engine for a game made by the same people who make an engine designed for military simulation. Just because Bohemia Interactive created it doesn’t mean it’s always going to be used in military applications
I quit when I became crippled from walking….yes walking off a 4 stair high ledge ….only 4 stairs high, no not stairways, just 4 actual stairs.
What does BI care if they make the game slowly? They already have your money.
You probably sprained your ankle by landing wrong.
